How does one accept credit cards through an online site?

I am opening up my own e-business but I do not know how one goes about accepting a credit card...Do I sign up through Visa or Masercard or what?

Just dont store any credit card numbers on a local database, make sure you use all 3rd party approved/verified sites.

I would assume you have to contact Visa/Mastercard/whoever else, they probably have some guidelines you have to follow.

You need a payment gateway and merchant account.

Couple ways you can do that. Talk with your bank about credit card processing. If through the web all you want to do is receive the cc num and process it the old fashioned way, that's the easiest. Or there are services out on the web, like Verisign, and they will provide you with the documentation of how to set up your site to interact with their services to place charges against credit cards.
