You should just restart your list and watching nothing but old John Carpenter movies over the weekend.

The Thing
Big Trouble in Little China
The Fog (I think that was him?)
Escape from ... both?

Love the feedback. Interesting to see the split on Drag me to Hell. Either like it or hate it. Gothika is another one I am considering.

How about 'The Shining'? That's a great movie IMO...although the book was far better.

Never saw 'Drag me to Hell' so I have no comment on it.

The original 'Night of the Living Dead' is a classic as well. I hadn't seen it before but caught it on one of the movie channels a couple years ago and really enjoyed it.

Drag me to Hell was rubbish--at least the first 10 minutes was, b/c that's when I stopped watching. it went from "Ooo, this is kinda neat...." to "Oh god, this shit just ate a big dumb bar for breakfast."

I don't know, it became really stupid and cheap real quickly, for me.

It's still pretty awesome and I don't care what the AVS guys say, I think the Blu-ray looks pretty darn good.

Besides, you should watch it just to get ready for the prequel.

out of recent horror flicks, i must say I really enjoyed The Mist a lot. Great movie IMO and has great acting and one thing I loved about the movie was the sound, and the fact that it had absolutely no musical scores during it at all (maybe the end or beginning but not in the middle).

I also really enjoyed Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, and I thought The Hills Have Eyes remake owned too, although very disturbing.

EDIT:

i know this isn't new, but I thought What Lies Beneath was also a very freaky movie.

I thought Gothika was pretty lame though (but you mentioning that reminded me of What lies Beneath)

Sorry, I did not read the whole OP before posting.

If you want an old school style (very slow burn but with a good payoff), horror film, you could check out The House of the Devil, I thought it was awesome. Very 80s, but made only last year.

The original Texas Chainsaw is always a classic for me, or maybe The Descent if you want something more recent.

Disturbing barely begins to describe it. The "trailer scene" was actually one of the few times in movie watchings that I was actually repusled to the point of wanting to crotch punch the directors for putting it in there.

love that scene, only because there aren't really any scenes at all in movies that can genuinely make me feel uncomfortable, and that one sure as hell can, every time i watch it.

If you watch The Descent, try to watch the European one (the one that was released first I believe).

I heard the ending on the US version is different. At least I know I saw an alt ending to the one I originally saw and it was weaker than the original ending.

I'm sure someone will correct me

US = happy ending
Euro = US + dark ending

As I wrote in the other thread:

Try Pandorum.

I think it's a really good creepy sci-fi movie that gives several nods to System Shock 2.

It's on my instant watch queue so I probably will watch it along with a few foreign horror flicks on Netflix instant.

I thought The Thing held up pretty well over the years. I watched it again about a year or so ago & was not disappointed. The special effects hold up for the most part and, well... it's just a good story.

I see Session 9 is on your list too. I really liked that. A little different than what i was expecting but a good, creepy thriller.
If you like that, check out some of Brad Anderson's other films. The Machinist is excellent & Transsiberian is pretty good too.

It's damn good on blu-ray. It still has a slightly dated feel, but the audio is top notch and the video looks better than it has in any previous format. I highly recommend it.

Oh and as far as scare factor, I don't think there has been a movie in the last 10 years that could top it. The special effects are so well done that they will hold up forever I think. I think that since they didn't use CGI, this level of special effect artistry creates even more realism than what you see today.

You make an excellent point about the special effects. I think toooo many movies today rely on computer generated effects and it makes the overall quality lower. CGI is close, but it's honestly not there. I don't care how many people think Avatar is great, I still watch it and I'm thinking "that's fake, that's fake, yep...that's fake too". It's mostly because I do video production and deal with it every day (not to mention that my wife says I ruin movies sometimes by going "that looks like shit" lol) but actual real special effects look better than CGI in 99% of the cases.

A lot of these movies do hold up well because a good makeup artist can make a movie look better than CGI can. Props to those guys who've been doing it for so long. They may be losing their jobs to freaking computers, but they have TALENT and it's going to be missed in the long run.

Funny you should mention Machinist...just saw that one last weekend and absolutely loved it. Had no idea that was the same writer as Session 9.
