How does GM's PASS key III work??

Need to make some extra copies of the key to the Trans Sport (Montana)... and I've discovered it has this GM immobilizer thingy.

Found this... linky
"GM's Transponder keys are identified by (PK3) stamped on the blade of the key. This system is the "Field Programmable" type. No special equipment is needed to add or originate keys. Just make a key by duplicating, code or fitting and program the key by following the instructions in the owners manual. Programming takes about 45 minutes."

So I guess you need a key made with this chip in it in order to start the engine? Does anyone know if I can get these keys made at like Home Depot, or do I have to go to GM and pay whatever price they want for their keys?

Also... is there such a thing as a plain key blank... which whould just allow the doors to be opened, but not start the engine?

Thanks

I think any key will work on the door, just not the ignition.

To get a duplicate ignition key just call the local GM dealer, they can give you instructions on how to get a dup ignition key.

I know for the Ford keys with chips in them you have to get them made at the dealer, if you want it to start the engine. Cost me 75 bucks for two keys. However, I was able to bring that down to 37.50 after yelling at the manager for 15 minutes.

Ouch.... so you paid like $37 USD for one Ford key??? :Q

I don't wanna know how much they'll charge me in CDN.

I'll try my luck at HD first.... then make my way to GM.... gotta go to GM anyway as the &*^#&* keyless entry isn't working 🙁
