How does Craigslist make money?

I just moved to NC from NJ and craigslist down here is sweet, i've got half my furniture from it (the other half i'm still browsing for 😛 ) how do they make money? i don't see any advertising and listing is free. god i love craigslist

^^ don't think so.

I don't think it's really meant to be a revenue generator, I think Ebay bought them out so they would have one less competitor that could possible take a bite out of their revenue.

Just for SF though. I think for every other location it's free.

ah yes, that's right

I've only ever seriously used the SF site.
So I guess the question is, are the fees on the SF part enough for the whole site?
I think it could very well be, its a pretty minimalistic site.

On the SF Bay Area site its 75.00 per category for a job opening listing... :Q

Heh, from wikipedia
Its sole source of revenue is paid job ads in select cities ($75 per ad for the San Francisco Bay Area; $25 per ad for New York; Los Angeles; San Diego; Boston; Seattle; Washington D.C., Chicago) and paid broker apartment listings in New York City ($10 per ad).

Uhhh... ebay owns craigslist

I thought eBay only had a 25% stake in CL?

Yeah just checked out the Wiki link.

It is believed to be owned principally by Newmark, Buckmaster, and eBay: the three Board members. Ebay owns approximately 25%, and Newmark is believed to own the largest stake.[6][5]

Hopefully ebay never purchases all of Craigslist. Suddenly you'll have to start paying $7.50 to list an item, and somehow they'll track your ass down to get their final value fee.

craig wasn't interested in becoming a bazillionaire like the google boys
he is a california whacko, but that is ok, to each his own

I bet he still makes good money and the amount of pressure/stress from work is 0. Not a bad life if you ask me - having 20M in the bank and 0 stress is a lot better than 2B in the bank and having to run around.

yes, i said it was ok
he is way smarter than me, so i won't throw stones at his non-billionaire house

How about Wikipedia ??
That site is worth like $5++ billions.
Yet, they seem to struggle to get by from donations and such to run the site.
Makes you want to either admire these people or think they're idiots for not cashing in.

Nice site, but, could be better. They should charge for listings in more areas to improve the site (global / regional searches for example, rather than just one section).

I bet he has 9 figures in the bank (the site generates $20+ million per year). That site is a major cash cow with literally zero overhead.

There are markets and types of ads that require payment.

I believe ebay would not have been allowed to buy, someone sold their stake to them.

There is a story on this.

I doubt he has that much, but could cash out anytime and have a billion or so after taxs.

Oh and Wikipedia people make money selling software/support. Wikipedia is just a good outlet to show others what their software can do.

I doubt zero overhead, unless all his employees are working for free.
