how does comcast stay in business?

I just checked their packages and Digital Silver is 82.95 with 1 Premium Channel. And I assume this does not include the equipment rental price.

yup.

i mean, just on the internet side, they took lines that were originally 10 Mbps to every house, and throttled them down to 1.5 Mbps. They've been raising them since, but they still aren't providing you with what the lines are designed for. that means less costs for them, but they charge exactly the same prices.

Not sure what you are looking at....but

"Digital Silver w/HBO, Showtime, Cinemax 3 Onscreen Guide $81.95 "

The package on Comcast.com has 3 premium channels (everything but stars) for $81.95.

Local monopolies.

I have no alternative but to use Comcast for cable TV and broadband internet to my house. It's either Comcast or unplug.

I was going to switch from DSL to cable modem. I called Comcast and they said it would be over a month and a half before a tech come install the service. I told them I could do it myself. She claims that a tech must be onsite for the initial install. What the huck?

I'm surprised they said that. My dad is a tech and they have him working 6 days a week, and we are having almost a shortage (don't want to call it that, because the numbers aren't that low) of techs around here. Where abouts do you live?

I pay 140 bucks a month for Extended Cable, Digital Silver, and HSI. It's a fvcking ripoff, but there's nobody else around to get service from. I guess I could try DirecTV, but I don't hear many good things about them either.

I'd be curious to hear some negative stuff about Direct TV. This past July marked my fifth year with them and I have never had to call them.

I have the TV on from 7 AM until about midnite.

I don't know how they stay in business, I pay ~14 a month for basic cable. of course I also pay ~52 a month for 8/768 internet

$10/mo though right?

I just got the HD DVR and then had someone from Comcast tell me that I HAD to get the digital plus if I get the HD DVR but not if I get the regular HD Receiver package. I was like WTF?!?
Still waiting to see what happens when my bill gets here.

You can't get DTV/Dish?
I could, but if I did, Comcast would jack my rate for high-speed internet and I can't get DSL (for some bizarre reason that Qworst won't explain, there's a CO only a mile from my house), and I'd have to get a telephone landline for DSL anyway.
No issue though. Once you weigh all the options, Comcast really is cheaper. Not cheap, but cheaper. I don't need a 20th century telephone landline for any of their services (would have a cell phone anyway), and I don't have to buy any additional equipment or pay any additional monthly charges (my DVR is an HTPC w/TV card).

ive never heard of a good cable company. this is because you have no choice.

thanks bush
Would you care to explain how Bush is responsible for laws that date back to the 70s?

I'm no fan of Bush (I didn't vote for him either time), but some of you idiots take Bush-bashing a bit too far.

There was a ruling recently that the cable co. didn't have to share their lines. I think that was the FCC and not Bush.

I wasn't being entirely serious, being this is P&N and all I felt the need to throw in a bush mention 🙂 I still think we could really benefit from some competition and getting rid of these utility monopolies. dick cheney loves utility monopolies

it's possible that ruling could come back and bite them in the ass. phone companies do have to share their lines which is why we get a choice of long distance providers. however cable companies want to be our sole provider of all communications and we're starting to see that with VOIP services, broadband internet, etc. at what point is there no longer a line to draw between phone and cable?

Got off the phone yesterday with tech support and they said they couldn't give me internet access b/c we downgraded our service to basic cable. To get internet access, we had to watch a video on how to use a cable box and then return the cable box we were supplied with......It wasn't long (about 1.5 hours) before i took teh phone from my gf and started bitching and moaning....after a half hour, I finally got the internet up.

BTW: I looked at my bill, and i was suppsoed to get the digital silver package AND Starz...worst customer support ever.

You don't hear anything good about DirecTV?

Here's one: NFL sunday Ticket - now with 30-minute games where you can replay an entire game without commercials, timeouts, etc. in about 30 minutes.

/end thread

I'm looking forward to comcast as they just bought our terrible local cable company out. Sure the rates will be higher, but the channel selection will be better and my internet ought to be about 8-10x faster.

Yep, the government creamed its jeans at the prospect of breaking up the fairly benevolent Ma Bell monopoly but they won't touch precious local monoplies the turd ball cable companies enjoy. Fvcking douches.
