How does carry-on luggage work?

I just got my boarding pass, and didnt check my 2nd bag. I wanted to save the $25 fee.

So how does this work, do I just carry the bag on the plane?

How big is it? If it's a backpack or similar size you can carry it on, otherwise you'll have to check it at the gate just before you board the plane.
