how does Cable Select work

how does it determine the drive order?

also, are there any disadvantages? why would i not use this all the time?

On the cable itself one of the connectors has a pin grounded, one has a pin open. This is how the drive knows "where" it's plugged into and takes care of itself. I don't use it myself, just 'cuz I don't really see the point in it ... but it has the advantage that you don't have to keep changing your jumpers depending on where your drives are plugged in. I guess I don't move my stuff around enough that it warrants having to deal with any possible ramifications of it.
