How does a voodoo 5 5500 AGP compare with whats out there today? What card out there now would be like its main competition or equal? How's its image quality compared to the others? Gaming / 3Dmark performance?

well the only game i play is CS and my v5 spanked my 64mb radeon vivo ddr. i do not know how the v5 would hold up against the ati and nvidia cards in more recent games, becuz ati and nvidia are constantly tweaking their drivers, but i'd say if u r playing old generation games, the v5 still kicks ass :)

Why do you ask? For features and performance the Voodoo 5 is closer to a Kyro II than the Radeon and Geforce lines. That is to say, no hardware T&L, no cube mapping, little possibility of trilinear or anisotropic especially. However, apart from Windows XP which doesn't want to allow it freedom in OpenGL (this is all to do with Microsoft policy), I never heard of problems with the V5, and the Kyro for technical reasons will always have new technical incompatibilities for some of the latest games.

Well, I think it compares to the Geforce2 GTS and Radeon. The new GF3 and Radeon 7500/8500 are faster. GF4 kicks its ass for sure.
V5 is faster than Geforce2MX in most games that I have seen, except for maybe Quake3 or something.
I have this card for more than a year now and it is great as all 3dfx products were. The driver stability and compatibility is just amazing.
Since I got my 10mbit broadband at home I have tried out most of the available game demos on my Voodoo5 and believe it or not, it was like more than 50, NONE of them had a single problem with my ancient Voodoo5.
Everything, even the newest games are perfectly playable at 800x600 with V5.
Image quality is superb, everyone will tel You that, 2D is one of the best I have seen, in fact, many say it is not true, I think V5 has BETTER 2D quality than the famous Matrox cards. I saw it on two identical monitors side by side with Matrox G400 and the V5 had sharper and richer image.
I still would not recommend to buy V5 anymore, since WinXP does not really have good drivers for it and there are newer and faster cards out there now. Go for Rageon 8500 or GF3/4 but stay away from GF4 MX.
Or maybe wait for the next Radeon card. R8500 still plays everything very fast and besides that has superb 2D and the best video/DVD capabilities.

I found some kick ass third party xp drivers! the configuration layout is exactly like the win9x.. if anyone wants them pm me.. I gotta find the link..

The V5 is now in my 2nd computer as I have moved on to the GeForce line of cards (gf2 ultra).. but honestly ill never get rid of that V5.. I guess its my tribute to 3dfx.. 3dfx's driver support was so awesome.. their drivers were badass! I wish Nvidias video configuration was more like 3dfx..

That IS a very nice price and you should have no probs selling it...in the right place...anyway, the V5 is my favorite card of all time...I currently own a V5 5500 AGP, a Velocity 100 (basically a V3 2000 with 8 megs RAM) and an Orchid Righteous 3d 4 meg PCI card...the original, bro... :)
I've owned various card, starting with Tsung Labs and Cirrus Logis, but later going with the 3dfx line as a general rule...I once purchased an ATI card, but it was an Xpert 98, so nothing really to brag about...I later got a GF2MX 400 32 meg PCI version, and was rather pleased with its performance, considering how much I paid for it...the Vanta LT 8 meg AGP card I sold really never got to try out, so I can't comment there either...I also recently won a Jetway 315 Magic 3d 128 meg AGP card on eBay, and I'm quite anxious to see just what it's capable of...
As far as visual quality, the V5 was a very nice surprise indeed...I still say no cards out there can touch its FSAA, save maybe the new GF4...I plan on keeping it in my main system for a while, since the performance will scale with the processor speed to around the 1600 - 1800mhz range...that's a feature that's hard to beat as well...sadly, I'd not recommend purchasing a new one anymore, or paying more than 60 - 70 bucks for one...the 3rd-party drivers for XP, though getting better all the time, will probably not have total support without the source codes...still, they've accomplished quite a bit considering the daunting task they've undertaken...me?...I just kinda sit back and watch, hoping the Holy Grail comes to light one day and we unearth those alusive source codes...I'm a regular contributor at the x3dfx Community forum and an ex- moderator/contributor at 3dfx Underground, so I've not given up hope...perhaps soon...if not soon, then it won't matter...I suspect DX9 is looming on the horizon...yikes!!!...

The Voodoo5 is about as fast as a Radeon 32 MB DDR. In terms of image quality it's great for what it supports but unfortunately it lacks a lot of 3D features so they're missing in games that take advantage of them (eg bump mapping, chrome/environment mapping, anisotropic filtering, etc).

Still kicking with my bada$$ Voodoo5, I had a chance to switch to a ATi 8500 and GF3 but i still when back to my old Voodoo5 card, you must think I'm crazy but the 2D quality on the voodoo5 is the bEST out there. I don't play many 3D games except CS and wolf but it handles them both quite nicely. Constant 100FPS in CS and wolf well its great at 960x680 :). If Warcraft3 comes out and my voodoo5 can't handle it then I'll switch to a GF4 if their 2D quality is worh it. Just my 2 cents
