How does a spoiler work ?

What is the use of a spoiler and how does it work ? I know that it is used to create downforce on a car, but does anyone know what principle of physics applies to this ?

In principle, it acts like a small wing to create downforce on the rear of the car at high speeds.

If you're ricer, it's just there because you need to compensate for something!
