How does a private sale of a car work exactly?

I'm selling a car that currently has an expired registration. What do I do at sale?

We both sign Bill of Sale with 2 copies.
I take off plates.
Then waht?

Here in Oregon...

You pay them, they write you a bill of sale & sign over the title.

They send in their part of the title, you take yours in for registration. The vehicle is registered in your name, & you get a new title.

Basically, it's the buyer's responsibility to register the car in their name.

Your bill of sale is proof that you sold it. HANG ON TO IT! I sold my brother's car for him and the buyer wrecked it and tried to file claim against his insurance. Thankfully I had the signed bill of sale to prove he bought the car.

Great. I can't find my title. 🙁 I have my registration (With an expired date) but no title

now i have to apply for a duplicate friggin title that takes 15 days to process? WONDERFUL.

In California:
They give you money
You sign title and give to them
You mail release of liability to DMV

You're done.

NICE ! found my title.

Ok, so as I understand it.

We sign Bill of Sale.
I sign over title.

But how does he drive it away? I have to take plates off to take back to DMV and he needs to get a new registration

Call the DMV. Most people here don't live in Massachusetts, and, as you've seen, the procedure is different in other states.
