I'm sitting here watching the Animal Planet and a wilder beast just gave birth to a calf. A few minutes later, it stands up and starts sucking its mom's tit. How does the calf know its supposed to do that?

Instinct doesn't tell the calf what a wilderbeast tit looks like though.

Lies.
When was the last time someone who just had sex for the first time was good at it.. .or even just okay. :p

You don't have to be good at it to make babies.
;)

We turned instinctual mating into a recreational activity. That doesn't change the fact that the main underlying actions aren't instinct.
You can be a minuteman and still have a baby. Nobody will say it was good sex, but the baby is thankful. :p

Do some people just not understand what constitutes an instinct?

It shouldn't surprise me that people are confused, yet I am still surprised.

Humans have instincts all the same. Some of ours are quite strong in terms of driving us.

Natural born reflex. You can get them to suck your finger by rubbing it on their cheek and they will turn towards it. Same as the grasping reflex infants have, thought to have helped infants hold on to their mothers.

Everything takes practice. I'm sure the wildebeast wasn't the best nipple sucker ever when he was first born, either.

I am pretty sure this is the only time that particular phrase has been used as a tag on ATOT.

It doesn't necessarily...it actually takes a lot of practice and effort to get the baby to nurse. There are even "lactation consultants."
