How do you "write math" on the comp

Meaning . . . if I wanted to IM somebody what a certain math problem is, how do i show "square root"

like if you want to put "x squared", you put x ^2

what do you put for "square root of x" ??

Same, if its something more complicated like a diagram or a long series of equations, it's sometimes easier to churn it out quickly in mspaint.
