Was just wondering what's considered "winning the olympics" I'd assume it is total gold medal, but could be mistaken.

I don't really look at it at a national level when talking about winning, I look more on the individual portion of it. I mean how does most of the world try to win the Olympics when countries like the US/China etc are fielding 600 person teams?

The IOC doesn't recognize national medal counts. Individual and team achievements are more important than national medal counts, unless we beat China.

Take whatever you are better at and promote the crap out of that!

China will most likely promote they had the most gold medals of any country, thereby being the best.
US will most likely promote they earned the most medals of any country, thereby being the best. (Oh, and have the most accomplished Olympian Phelps as a citizen)

Whatever the it takes to run the country propaganda is how you "win" the Olympics!

It depends if you are the country that either has the most medals overall or the country that has the most gold medals. If you ask either of these countries, I am sure you can predict what their answer would be...

You can only "win" the Olympics if you destroy the very spirit it was created to embody.

If we are going to come up with a forumula for winning the Olympics, there should be a penalty for winning the gold in ping pong, badminton, beach volleyball, bmx racing and rhythmic gymnastics.

who cares? the olympics is top heavy for medals in commie sports like gymnastics (team overall, individual overall, each particular bit), and light in medals for real sports like basketball (only one medal is given out, not one for best free throw shooter, best 3 pointer, least fouls, etc.).
