Well, just lost another bid on E-bay by $.01 and am wondering how these people do it. I am familiar with Esnipe.com but what some people seem to do defies logic. What are they using to successfully trump bids by a mere penny? Esnipe makes you set your bid...I have to think these people have something that scans the highest bid and adds a penny to it. Anyone know how this is done????

I don't think it's possible, since most auctions require bid increments to be more than $0.01.

is it possible you bid at the same exact time? One thing tho, i bid on a poster and apparently hit the guys high, so my bid was $12.50. Well, at the last second, i bid $20 anyway just to make sure.. i raised it up by .01 :p Not totally related, but just an observation.

<< P.S. I'm not "crying"...just wondering. $24 was the most I wanted to spend on it anyway. >>

You would spend the $24 for the item, but you wouldnt pay $24.03? WOW you can really stick to your guns.

You sure the winning party just wasnt using proxy bidding? And the computer just bumped him enough to win the item since his maximum was higher than yours?

always bid an even number.. usually most people will do the .01 deal... so you do a .02 thing...

Dood, what is happening is the winning bidder put in a bid higher than the current low bid price. Ebay will then show that bidder being the current high bidder at next bid level. Then, when you make a bid that is still lower than the bid he put in previously, the current bid price goes to the next bid level above your bid for the other bidder, since he is willing to pay more. If the other bidder put in a max bid of $20.01 and you bid $20, he wins the auction at $20.01. Like another poster said, always bid a few cents to a quarter over your actual bid amount if you really want to win.

Yeah, don't bid $x.00 or $x.01, most people are brilliant enough to snipe a little higher. If you had bid $24.03 you would've had him beat because $24.02 was his max bid. Even $0.02 is an unsafe bid because if you bid that he still would've gotten it if his bid was earlier than yours (bids of the same amount go to the earlier bidder).

Thanks guys, I think I now understand a lot better about it. I didnt know about proxy bidding. Still, I wonder why my bid of 24.01 doesnt even show up in the bid history!!!

If you notice the user "Ra62"'s final bid just magically happened to be EXACTLY .50 (the bid increment) lower then the winning bid of 24.02!!!
This bid of 23.52 would have made my bid of 24.01 one penny under Ebay's rules and thus, my bid was never even placed.
My question then has to be...how did Ra62 come to bid just enough to shut out my bid? And, assuming he knew this much...why did he stop bidding there?

Thanks for all of your help...I hope this hasnt been a bother!!!

I have seen things go right above my max bid also. I am thinking that some of these people have some way of looking and seeing what you put down for your maximum bid. I don't know...but it pisses me off.

Is your eBay name ra62? Because according to the Bid History you bid at 21.01, 22.01 and 23.52..

Who's sniping who??

Looks to me like the winner of this auction had an even HIGHER max bid set, maybe $25. Sometimes it is "fun" to make a guess at someones high bid, then run the price up to just below that. Of course looking for the high bid can have disasterous consequences....You might find it, then end up paying more for something then you really wanted to. This is a danerous thing for buyers to do, but as a seller I say bring it on, let the war begin!

ebay works by putting in your MAX bid and it bids for you... say the item starts at $10.01, there is usually like a $0.50 increase... well, instead of putting in a max bid of $11, or $11.01, put it in for $11.02 and that way someone will bid $10.51, then someone will bid $11.01 and you still beat them!
