at work I juggle about 5 servers through terminal services, so having multi screens is a godsend

I'm running 2x Dell 2005 wide screens.

Left monitor has firefox, right monitor has email, whatever poker site I'm playing on, etc.

dual monitor setups are good if you do a lot of cross-referencing work or work with two or more programs at once.

19" is not an upgrade from 17" its just that the pixels are larger.

Upgrade to at least a 20" lcd.

In any case, I have both a 21" and 17" lcd. Use them both at the same time.
Aim/winamp on 17", gaming on the other.

or

MS word on one and Powerpoint on the other.

I had the same image on both screens and had one monitor in the next room, with the cord going through the wall. Full PC setup in one room and monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse in the other.

Left Screen 19" Samsung SyncMaster 950p
Right Screen 19" hp pavilion f1903

I need to upgrade to a 19" on the left side because the CRT is freakin' hot. It gives off so much heat and makes it unbearable to work in my room during the day, especially with this heat wave summer.

Anyways, I do most of graphics stuff on the left screen, and expand to both screens depending on the program. Photoshop, Flash and Maya i'll usually take up both screens. Autocad will use both screens if im copying stuff from one file to another.

If i'm just dickin around, i'll have winamp and AIM on the right screen, and browse on the left.

Got three Dell 2001FP displays side-by side. The leftmost one has the video editor running on it (Premiere or Avid), the middle one has whatever else I'm working on displayed on it (graphics, HTML, documents), and the rightmost one has command palettes for the application on the middle display and either a browser (if I'm writing HTML) or thumbnails of the source materials I'm working with.

When I do development, the left one gets the documentation and release notes that I'm writing or the debugging info, the middle one has the source editor, and the rightmost one runs the software.

Work computer doesn't have a tv tuner fish card and IM is for messaging between employees in different locations. A lot cheaper to IM someone in another area code than to call them.

id say depends what you use it for... i'd love to have a dual monitor setup but its not happening soon... would definitely make research for papers, coding and other multitasking stuff easier... its a pain in the ass to switch windows sometimes
