how do you update Half-Life: Counter-Strike?

I installed Half-Life:Counterstrike and it works. but problem is when i try to update to hl1110 it keeps telling me i have to install half-life first.

what am i doing wrong?? if i've installed Half-Life:Counterstrike, don't i have half-life installed??

it doesn't like the directory i'm sending it to: C:\program files\valve\counterstrike

where should i install it too?

I think you need to make sure you downloaded the right update. There's a mod version and a retail version. The target folder will vary depending on which version you got.

This should have been posted in the software forum....

HL 1110 should update regardless of HL version...

hey, if i dl counterstrike 1.5 full version, will that take care of the hl update also?

i'm confused. i installed the cs 1.5 and it says it can't find the HL.exe.

i'm uninstalling half-life:counter-strike and i'm gonna try it again.

i don't understand why this isn't working. the patch should work.

ok, i figured it out. it says the patch is for a different language than the one installed.

errr. how do i figure out which language it is?

Okay, let's clear a few things up.

Did you buy Half life and are now trying to install CS as well, or did you buy CS retail?

If you bought CS retail, then you can't update halflife AFAIK because it's not installed. Actually, valve has a little update utility for you.

it was a Radeon copy of Half-Life:Counter-Strike. that's how it's titled.

so, if i understand correctly, i can't update Half-Life if it's purchased as Counter-Strike. ok.

where can i get the valve utility?

Yea, you don't actually have Half Life then, "Half Life Counter Strike" is a bit of a misnomer.
Not sure about the retail version of Counter Strike, which is basically what you have, but with Half Life, the Update Utility is built into the game, so that when you start it up, one of the opening screens where you have configuration, etc, you also have an "update" tab.

You want to look for updates and/or patches for the retail version of Counterstrike. You can look here.

i finally found the counterstrike retail patch.

so, i don't have half life. i only have counterstrike. that kinda sux because i wanted to try some of the half life mods.

when i bought this, it was represented to me as half life.

should i try and get some money back?? they clearly said it was half life with counterstrike bundled NOT half life:counterstrike retail.

I'm pretty sure you can run other mods like natural selection and dod with CS retail..... I've had terrible experiance with the retail version tho(my friends had alot of trouble with the retail version)

I looked at that eBay link, it doesn't really say it is Half-Life you are getting, so I don't know about any recourse you might have.
Counter Strike-Team Fortress Classic-Half-Life Uplink are other specific items.
I've been running a CS server for years, never heard of anyone having particular trouble with CS retail.
You could get a used copy of Half-Life pretty cheap I would think. See here at eBay.

if you saw that w/o knowing anything about half life or Counter strike, you wouldn't assume that was Half Life cd you were getting?

it all installed, i played the training demo, i got it upgraded. everything seemed ok. now i go online to play and i get the message "CD-Key invalid".

i'm very unhappy at this point, because before i bid on this, i specifically asked if all the games had original cd-keys. .

Yes, well you may have a basis for complaint on this point.

Counter Strike is an online-only game. The CD Key which produces a unique online ID is essential to be able to use it.
Not only must the CD Key be valid, but in order to go online, noone else but be using it online at the same time.

Remember that if you are still interested in playing HL and CS, you need only get a valid copy of HL with it's CD key, then download the mod version of CS. Two great games in one (more actually, as there are a dozen or more great, free HL mods besides CS).
In this regard, best to buy a new, unused copy of HL, to insure that noone else will be using the CD key.
