How do you uninstall software in MacOS (9)?

I accidentally posted this on the Off-Topic forum before... Here we go again...

We have a G4 Cube in our lab that nobody wanted to touch (everyone uses PC's here). I don't even know where it came from, it was just there... The poor thing looked so neglected, I decided to "adopt" it and made some room for it on my desk - which was not that difficult considering how small this machine is 🙂. Someone did fool around with it before and they managed to install a lot of junk that I want to get rid of. But no matter how much I look, I just cannot seem to be able to find the way to remove software from this thing.

My questions are then:
1.Does MacOS have a registry-like database that you have to remove entries from, or can you just simply erase the folder of an application to remove it?
2. If there IS a registry, then where is it?
3. If there is an uninstall procedure other than "dump it", then what is it?

Any people with Macintoshes out there, please help!

Some come with unistallers. Usually, this isn't necessary since you can just delete the app or folder on a mac. There is no registry to worry about.

You can also delete the preferences file for the app in the /System Folder/Preferences. You might want to see if the app installed an extension or control panel too.

Yup, you can almost always just trash the folder that an app is in. It may have preference files in the SystemFolder : Preferences, but those don't conflict. In some cases (Office, IE) it installs things in the extensions folder, but that is more rare.

you can just dump the folder of whatever program you wanna get rid of from the APPLICATIONS folder. if youre really anal about keeping the system clean you can go look in SYSTEM FOLDER:EXTENSIONS to see if anything is left behind.

Ya, me too,

I have a large desk, feel free to dump all the G4 Cube you like

bump for a Good Computer but Fail miserably because of ridiculous price tag.

They wanted the limited upgradability of the towers. I want a wall of cubes. It would be kinda cute in the right room. Plus it could sit there crunching something for Team anandtech all day 😉

the right room...mine. i know thats what youre thinking n0c. you seem to be one of the residident apple lovers like myself. actually i think it would look good in my room because my room is kinda small. i actually live in the loft in my apartment so it would be kinda cool to come up the spiral staircase and see a wall of cubes...that and i want a wall of cubes.

Thank you for the replies, people 😀. I gathered up enough courage to relocate Outlook Express and Netscape 4.7 into the Dumpser, thanks to your helpful advice!!!

I am actually starting to like this little machine (although I am still not using it for anything). It is wonderfully quiet since it has no fans in it, the only thing that tells you it is running is the glowing power button. I just wish they had bundled a good mouse with the Cube instead of the stupid full-surface button thingie. And I miss the scroll wheel! Where is my scroll wheel? 🙁

basically. It wouldnt look good in my bedroom right now, but Id change the whole bedroom to get this. Or maybe make the door to my closet out of cubes or something... 😛

Ive been a Mac fan ever since I saw Mac OS X, and especially since I bought an iBook to play with it.
