I saw that when I was looking on the web. but it doesn't go through the self check thing, it only says look for bulges. How do you cvheck for really minor cases where you have to feel for it. I'm not sure exactly what I'm feeling for.

Inguinal hernias are hard to find (& fairly common), we occasionally do CT scans to detect them, or an X ray with contrast media.

If you think you have one, you prob need to get it checked out by a pro.

And what do we look for when we do this? A sharp pain or something? Looking for 'bulges' doesn't help...that's a very 'bulgy' area to begin with :p

When your small intestine pops out every once in a while to say, "hello!", you got a hernia ;)

No joke: if you can get it hard, you're ok...if you cant get it hard then you have something wrong.

Well no sh!t Sherlock! Of course it could be something besides a hernia that prevents it from standing to attention.

wrong - hernias can happen in different places of the abdomen. I've had 2 hernia surgeries (inguinal, both sides originally, then another repair on the left side). There was no impairment of erection, so that is NOT a reliable indicator.

The hernia is when the abdominal muscles are torn, or seperate enough to allow part of the intestine to squeeze through. It's possible that the intestine can slip back where it belongs, also. A doctor is better qualified to diagnose it, and advise you. Some cases may not require surgery, some may start out small and get worse, and some should be taken care of immediately - if the muscles cut off the blood flow to the trapped part of the intestine, it's serious.

get checked by a doctor -

good luck
:)

your sack becomes as big as a basketball. There are other types of hernias too. My friend had a piece of kevlar patched in his groin after his hernia.

That is not the only type of hernia.

From Dictionary.com

hernia

\Her"ni*a\, n.; pl. E. Hernias, L. Herni[ae]. [L.] (Med.) A protrusion, consisting of an organ or part which has escaped from its natural cavity, and projects through some natural or accidental opening in the walls of the latter; as, hernia of the brain, of the lung, or of the bowels. Hernia of the abdominal viscera in most common. Called also rupture.

Strangulated hernia, a hernia so tightly compressed in some part of the channel through which it has been protruded as to arrest its circulation, and produce swelling of the protruded part. It may occur in recent or chronic hernia, but is more common in the latter

Plenty of undetectable-by-owner hernias exist, so go get checked. Often, surgery is not immediately required so ya can schedule conveniently.
Avoid catching colds/flu when recovering, as coughing when your abdomen is (literally) stapled together requires effort to avoid painful percussive disturbance of the affected area! As with vasectomies, when the doctor tells you to take it easy during recovery do as directed. Finally, ask for decisive pain killers just in case. Tylox (with a bit of schnapps) worked for me.
