my dad just moved into his new home he had built, the fireplace he picked out is operated via remote control, so you just *click* and its on

click to inrease/decrease the flame, and the fan speed

at 9,000 feet it actually works just fine...gives you a nice 4-5" flame, nothing more.

When we went camping we'd make "napalm" (jellied gasoline, not the "real" napalm though), which we could smear on the logs to get them started. It was STILL very hard to start a fire at ~12-13,000 feet.

You have the fire cradle, put some small peices of scrap wood on there, maybe .75" by 2", short length. Put your logs on top of that. Then shove a couple sheets of newspaper under the whole thing and set fire to the newspaper.

When you stack your wood leave as much open space as possible, maybe go lincoln-log style with your big logs to get a nice open space in the middle of everything so it can get plenty of air.

I love our fireplaces.

I used to burn wood in our fireplace but with my son being somewhat asthmatic I decided to get a gas log set. It looks real enough, throws off some heat (not as much as wood but enough to warm the room). Best part is there is no dust, smoke or ash to clean. I just light a long match and turn on the gas. Poof, instant fire. 😀
