we moved into a house during the beginning of this year, and it has two fireplaces. we decided to use the one in our hall yesterday.

we started our fire by placing the woods in the shape of a teepee, and place a pice of camphor at the bottom, and another somewhere else in there. this got the camphor started, and once the wood was hot enough, it started burning as well.

how do you start yours?

we have a stack of old newspaper. Just rip some up into shreads when you want to start a fire and put some small pieces of wood on top of it with a bigger log on top of that, all stacked so there is plenty of air and space under there for the newspaper to burn. It works great.

Yup, that's exactly how we do it too. We've got a metal grate that elevates the fire ~6in from the bottom of the fireplace.

I think that's a pretty standard way to do it. I knoww it's how we do it at my house.

gas fireplace, we have long matches that we keep there

place it in front of the gas pipe entry thingy (?????) and EVER SO SLIGHTLY turn on the gas

we get a little flame and then turn it up AFTER WE TAKE OUR HAND OUT

otherwise, i'd be in the darwin awards

doesn't anybody use the camphor method? i mean, isn't it better to recycle the papers, and use the camphor instead?

Tin can with gasoline that sits under the grate with stacked wood.

Now tell me how this is safe.
