i tend to spell it "thru". could we just change the spelling to "thru" permanently??

Hey, the federal and state governments all spell it THRU on all the street signs, hence "thru" must be OFFICIAL.

websters says thru is informal for through. JUST MAKE IT FORMAL. there is no reason not to and it can save everyone about 3 characters in typing, printing etc every time you use the damn word.

did you check out the link?? it's already considered an informal usage of the word through. it isn't confused with anything else. no one would confuse thru with threw. there is no other word that uses the spelling for thru. so why not??

your claim that thru looks stupid is stupid. :)

No, I don't trust webster's. But dictionary.com has it listed as the same.

It should stay "through". "Thru" looks as though it should be pronounced "thruh" since there is nothing present to make the "u" long. (I suppose that "thrue" would be the clearer way to spell the pronounciation.)

it's already commonly spelled "thru". that's why its in the dictionary as informal usage of through.

if it has made it in the dictionary as informal, then it's a reasonably small step to make it formal. it should only be a matter of usage. if the overwhelming majority of people start to use thru instead of through then an official change will be made. :)

that's how i see it happening anyway. :)

Understood, but you still aren't ever going to find me using the word "thru" unless I'm discussing a trade name or specifically referencing the degenerate spelling of "through". :p

"Thru" would be informal for "Through", according to Websters. So, though thorough linquistic representation would defer to "Through", thought should be given as to how it's intended to be used.

Frankyl, 'through' would have a slightly different pronunciation than 'thru'. Just like in the word 'when', there should be a difference from 'win' or 'wen', if it was a word :p
EDIT:
Evidently dictionary.com says: 'hwen, wen' for pronunciation of 'when', but the second 'wen' is newer. Sounds less formal to me...

"You're"? :p

You can't be just now discovering that I'm stubborn, I would think that my stubborn-ness would have been evident very early on. It's all the German blood in me. "You can always tell a German, but you can't tell him much." ;)
