How do you sort your video collection?

I've always had a dir on a large HDD and in that dir I'll make a folder for the movie and then place the file into that folder.

Easy enough to find a movie if I know what I want by name.

I have about 450 movies now and as my collection grows, I find that I have so many choices that it's becoming harder to sort through everything to just find something I might want to watch without having a specific title in mind.

I'm half tempted to break everything down by either year the movie came out or genre. I like the genre idea but I can see it being very difficult to categorize some movies into one specific genre since they could cover many. I recall when I was 16 and worked at a local video rental store how that was always an ongoing issue that threw people off. Movies like Lethal Weapon would at some places be categorized as a comedy and others as an action for example.

So I'm wondering, how does everyone here sort their movies?

FWIW I'm sort of limited to sorting by using folder layouts since I view all my movies by streaming them to my PS3 using TVersity ATM, so no Windows Media Center solutions will do the trick.
 
I don't have a ton of movies, but they're pretty much 1 big chunk. I keep animated movies in 1 folder, the rest are just loose.
 
I just keep them in a single folder in alpha order. But I only have about 100 movies/series.

That's funny, I just installed and then uninstalled this yesterday.

I installed it and played with it for a few mins but it looked like all it did was stream and transcode, which didn't seem to offer anything beyond what I already get from TVersity, but after reading their site more it looks like they have an IMDB plugin that seems like it could be very useful.

I'll give it another try.

get a media player like XMBC, Boxee or even a Popcorn Hour.
Let it categorize you movies and then you can search by genre, actors, years, etc etc.

(in other words, ditch the PS3 for viewing your content. Xbox360, PS3 etc suck as media players.)

Meh. I had an HTPC for years, I prefer my PS3.

I separate anime from US cartoons, from TV shows, from "movies" if I were smart I'd separate by documentaries as well, and other movie categories.

I've always just used mkv2vob with great success.

Is there a way to get this PS3 Media Server to just stream and not transcode at all? Every movie I have is natively support by the PS3 and I'd not want it to mess with the quality for no reason, just get the added bonus of displaying thumbnails and IMDB info...

I have a Vista Media Center in my bedroom, which is fine but I have no desire to put a computer in my living room when my PS3 can natively support all the movies I have.

It's not particularly relevant, I just don't want to deal with PC issues for my living room media entertainment these days. I also don't need another device (media unit already has DVR, receiver, PS3, HD-DVD, and Wii in it), and don't really need categorizing/searching because I know what I want to watch when it's movie watching time.

Genres is no good - stuff can fit into multiple genres (that's what... she said?). I had to split stuff up because the Xbox 360 is retarded with scrolling through long lists. It goes slow slow slow slow SUPER HYPER FAST. I've gotten to the point where I can let off the stick (that's what... she said?) right before it's about to go fast, but it's not terribly convenient for scrolling through long lists. Thus the need to split stuff up by decade.
 
Videos go into a main folder called Videos.. From there there are sub folders, TV Shows, Movies, Pornography, Anime, Misc Videos.

I use XBMC as my front end on my laptop and my PC connected to my Projector. I use an app called Xbox Media Companion (found it on the XBMC forums) that scans my movie files, and creates an NFO file for it, and download coverart for it. This helps me when I import it into XBMC, or if i just want to play the file straight from my hard drive. Helps me keep track of the movies.
