How do you set up a server...

Ive read a few articles and from what i understand I software to set up my home server. SOme name mentioned were IIS 4.0 and going to cnet i found some others such as APache. Which prog would be the best to use. Also whats the diffence betw a proxy server and a server. ANy help you could give would be great. Thanks
btw I have win2k, are their any native programs in it to set up a server, like win98's personal web server

I'm very weak in this area, but I'll try a couple of answers, while the experts are on their way.

IIS 4.0 is for Win NT, or Win2K. Apache is for UNIX or Linux. Most Linux distributions have it built right in. I don't know if it works on Windows. Apache (as well as Linux) are free, or very cheap.

A proxy server is simply a "go between" that masks the systems behind it. Many use it as a firewall. It doesn't really serve up anything other than protection and translation.

I believe that Win2K does have some time of server built in, but has a limit on the number of users. Win2K Pro doesn't have a limit (again, I "think&quot😉.

When you say "server" you are being very general. apache and IIS are Web servers. In general a server is any machine that allows other machines to connect to it and use its resources. By this definition, setting up a server can be as easy as enabling file sharing. Or it could mean setting up a rack optimized quad-xeon with 2 gigs of memory, redudant hot-swappable power supplies, hot swappable RAID 5 and a fibre channel array.

So, in other words, you need to be a little more specific 🙂
