How do you set the Refresh rates on a monitor?

Hi,
I'm wondering how you set the refresh rates on a monitor. I'm only aware of how you change resolutions and then there is something like 16bit, 32bit, 256 color, etc.. How do you actually change the refresh rate?

It's weird, I just got a new monitor and there is more screen flicker at the lower resolutions than at 1280 x 1024. What could be causing this?

Can you harm a monitor by using too high of refresh rate that isn't supported by a video card?

Thanks,

Sal

It depends on your video card/driver but normally you go into the Display settings and click on Advanced. There should be a monitor selection in there.

No, you can only hurt your monitor if you use a refresh rate it can't support.

probably would be best to get the latest .inf file from the manufactuer's website of your monitor....if ya have then you should be good to go.

Monitors are optimized for a certain resolution and refresh rate. If it is a large monitor, it may be optimized for a high resolution, and if you use a lower resolution, the monitor might not support a fast refresh rate at that lower resolution.

Strange but true.

That really is strange...... considering Ive never heard that nor experienced that. But then again I have not used every monitor. Though that is good information to jot down for future reference.

Anyways it won't be under "monitor" as the one guy stated, but under "adapter". You will have default, optimal, and then every resolution that is supports in between. If you have the wrong INF it may allow you to choose a refresh rate to high, but if you choose it too high your monitor will start blinking orange (he power light that is) and on the better monitors will tell you "No signal found" So thats nothing to worry about. windows pretty much fail safes it so that you cannot run a higher res/refresh rate unless you do some hacking...... which can be done.... only intentionally though.

Hope this helps.

The monitor is a G420s Sony. I went to the Sony site and they only have a 420GS listed. I looked at the Acrobat information file and it's definitely a different monitor. I don't want to download the wrong INF file.

BTW.. What does this INF file do for you anyway? Is it like an online tweak guide or is it software for tweaking, i.e., setting resolution?

I hope this thing supports one notch below 1280 x 1024 because it's a little small for what I'm used to for everyday computing. I do like to bump it up while looking at photos though.

Thanks again,

Sal

Well.. I just changed my refresh rates. I selected 85 Hz at 1280 x 1024 and boy do my eyes like that setting. I don't know what it was at default, but it was way too much flicker, that it was starting to give me a headache.

It gave me the warning not to select a higher refresh rate than what the monitor supports, but will it hurt the monitor any if my video card can't keep up with the monitor? I don't want to damage my monitor any with a 4mb video card until I can get another card.

One question. When I upped the refresh rate, my wallpaper image got smaller. Why did it do this? I originally had about a 1/4 inch gap of black space between my computer case and the image and now I have about 2 inches on either side and about an inch of black on the top. It's sort of like watching a widescreen dvd on a P&S television. What gives?

Same here with my Dell P991 (GeForce 2 GTS) have mine at 1280x1024@85, perfect!

So how do you like the Sony CPD-G420S so far? Are you glad you bought it?

I gotta tell ya saving 20% off AND free shipping was a killer, lots of people kicking themselves right about now for not jumping on this deal. They can't say they never knew about the deal because it was in my sig and with over 6,000 posts in almost every forum I'll bet half of AT saw my sig :)
