WTF, i'm one out of the four that say "earl?!" MAnn, that's so odd, i thought i would be the majority  At least i've saved myself about an hours worth of talking saying "earl" instead of spelling out U-R-L :p

Ok so if your talking about saying it, URL is 2 extra syllables. Spelling it URL is one less letter. Your a freak.

"earl" has two extra syllables? Since when? It's said with one breath, with one curling of the tongue! It's like saying "food."

Sounding out U, then R, then L-- there's your three syllables. You're the freak.

Glad to see I was right..

Thought "earl" was strange...

However, I could see it pronounced like "ural" as in Ural Mountains

but where did they get "earl" from ?

so then, since SQL isn't pronounced "sequel", URL is not neccesarily pronounced "earl".

A guy I worked with said "earl" one time which caused me to immediately hate him. It takes a long time to gain my trust back after something like that too.

Please think before you alienate those around you.

you-are-ell for me. Pretty much everyone I know pronounces it letter-by-letter.

One place where it seems to be acceptable (and even correct) to pronounce an acronym as it appears is SCSI. You hardly hear anyone refer to it as ess-see-ess-eye.

I pronounce it 'earl' when I'm talking to someone who knows what a URL is. When speaking with a neophobe I say 'ewe-arrr-ell', which really shouldn't matter because no matter whom I say it to, they cock their head not unlike the dog that they are.;)

URIAL, damit!

I think 'urial' is better, since 'u' is pronounced distinctly. You can't hear 'u' in earl.

Actually I've heard a lot of people refer to it as "sequel". Don't remember ever hearing someone call a URL "earl".

I say web address. Too many people still get confused when I say U-R-L, or earl.
