how do you say '3.0'?

I say "point" if it's a number and "dot" if it's a software version. With software versions it's not really a decimal point, it's just a separator. 7 dot 8 dot 5 dot 2 sounds better than 7 point 8 point 5 point 2 IMO.

If you had said 3.2, then I would say three point two. Always point. Dot is silly and period is just stupid.

It's not a decimal number. 3.0 is not equivalent to 3 in software releases. 3.0 means version 3, patch 0. 3.1 means version 3, patch 1. Just saying 3 refers to the entire 3 release regardless of patches.

I honestly can't think of a single time in my life where I've needed to refer to a "point oh" version of any software. But then again, most of my friends are non-techies, so if I start throwing versions out to them, they're going to stare at me blankly until I give up and walk away.
