How do you retain written information?

I like to go through the work I'm about to read, read the first few paragraphs and the last few paragraphs to get a rough idea of what I should be looking for in that chapter. Essentially I establish a framework into which I'll plug the information I read from the chapter. I also take notes in point form on everything I read (when reading it for school/general knowledge, and not entertainment...then again, I don't read for entertainment. )

Anyone else do anything they find useful in retaining information while studying?

All through school I never had to take notes. Just remember keywords and if I understood the info everything else would just kind of stick with me. I studied very little, just one of those lucky people that can easily remember stuff if I want to.

I have tried this. While I found it effective, i found it also to be very time consuming. I found that simply reading aloud to myself and going back and reviewing what I read works best for me. Written notes help as well.

It is very time consuming. The more time consuming it is the more effective it is though because you have to think about it more. But yeah, I think I spend 3-4 hours on 20 pages of reading including typing time.
