how do you remotely shut down linux! FAST ANSWER PLEASE!!!

As root,

shutdown -h 0

On many systems, the no-arg command halt (again as root) does the same thing.

man shutdown

People still shut down their computers when its lightning? Even though I have an APC UPS which is supposed to protect against such things, I have NEVER had lightning cause any problems with any PC or appliance in my house. The same goes for all my relatives and friends as well. I am not saying it CAN'T happen, but its not like something blows out every time a flash of lightning occurs.

To me, its not worth worrying about.. Thats why I pay insurance. 🙂

I think it really depends on where you live. If you live in a city, it's not a big deal at all. But i'm here in the burbs and my backyard is all woods. There's trees everywhere. About 2 years ago there was a huge storm and one of the trees got struck back there. The bolt managed to take out my entire computer, a couple clocks, my a/c, a 35' TV. Since then i've just been weary about lightning, even though I don't unplug my machines during a storm i've been putting a lot of thought into building my own UPS just to make sure.. 🙂
