How Do You React To Spoilers?

I am perfectly OK with them.

In fact, I look for them. I want to make sure the 'twist' or whatever is worth investing my time into it. Be it games, movies, TV shows, books, comics, etc.

Like in TWD, someone at work told me Hershel's head gets chopped off before I got caught up on that episode. I wasn't super happy about it, but it prepared me for out so I wasn't too distraught.

But personally I do prefer not knowing because that's part of the fun. The point of a story isn't knowing the whole story, it's having the story unfolded to you - that's what storytelling is.

Other than ruining the climax, I find that spoilers ruin other parts of the movie if you're spending that time thinking "I wonder if this is when [character's name] dies."

I really place more of the blame on myself than the person who spoiled it. If I really don't want something to be spoiled I should stay well clear of any information on that something. After all, what was I doing in the Game of Thrones thread at all if I hadn't seen the last 5 episodes of season 4?

I once came across someone who said even mentioning the word spoiler is a spoiler, because then they will know there is a twist and will always be on the look out for it. I mean, I get it, you want the best enjoyment of what you are watching and spending money on,.. but, isn't that a bit much of an stance on spoilers?

Nonetheless, there are certainly people who become down right psychotic and have a mental break down. Even issuing death threats.

I don't like irresponsible spoiling like blurting it in headlines or almost making it a malicious intent in ruining someone else's experience. It's just a dick move.

Tagging something as a *spoiler* is perfectly fine as that allows me the ability to self censor and skip it. The dude that spoiled the American Ninja Warrior winner needs punched in the dick.

Especially in this day and age of Tivo where more and more people catch up on things a day or two later. I don't have three hours a night to dedicate to watching something like that. But I can Tivo it and compress it down to 1.5 hours which is more approachable.

I always rush to see a movie the day it's out because I know people love to spoil things and will find intuitive ways to do it. Often time it's right in a topic title. Or Trade chat or some other crap. Also:

-Your character IS Revan.
-Ghaleon is the Magic Emperor.

I'm fine with movies. That's a 2 hour emotional investment that I don't even have to pursue if the spoiler was damning enough.

What gets me are things like the American Ninja Warrior one yesterday morning where I've watched something over the course of months and have developed "favorites" in the contestants and enjoy seeing some succeed and hope they do well. Plus since it's on TV I make use of the Tivo and catch up on it the next day. Same thing for other TV shows that have similar sort of reveals or twists that you have a long investment in. GoT is different since it originated from a book and most *major* plots are already well known to the readers.

Most of the time those things are contained in threads or vague enough to avoid the topic. But just vomiting results in a thread title is not cool.

Agreed. Or years for that matter. Most of these guys have been around for several seasons. And nobody's won it before. It was the ultimate douche move.

I would only get annoyed if I said I hadn't watched something and then someone then spoils it. Nothing to get too pissed about though. Its hard with geeks though because they get so exited about crap that they often forget not everyone is as obsessive. lol It actually happened during a Labor Day BBQ. A friend said she hadn't caught up on Game of Thrones, then these other two start talking about the show. I knew they were going to spoil it, and even said a few times "Remember, she's only on episode 2." Then maybe 5 mins after my last warning they are talking about the finale. Then the person who said she didnt see it says "Wait, what do you mean

Then everyone shames them for the next 30 minutes. :biggrin:

On a forum, just dont read the threads if you're not caught up. It should be expected that people want to discuss the show in a thread about the show. Putting spoilers in titles sucks, but no one really intends to ruin it for everyone.

If a movie is good knowing the spoilers will not ruin the movie. You may not enjoy it as much but it cannot hurt a good film.

Second, it does not really matter if you tell me the spoiler to any M. Night Shyamalan film after Signs because I am not going to see them. Further i will always regret seeing Signs.
