How do you properly "network" with others?

It seems to me that people receiving e-mails from people they don't already know is a bad idea. I am signed up at mosnter.com for their networking service however out of all the fifty invites I sent to speak and network with me I received 0 msgs back.

Meetings, confrence calls, confrences, seminars, workshops, friends of friends, etc.

"business networking" is a more accurate term, IMHO.

I thought it was more like getting to know your co workers on a more personal level. Then you can meet up after work so you can meet his friends yadda yadda. Also it helps if you join associations of your profession and meet people that way.
