How do YOU pronounce these words?

I have a few words that really drive my GF crazy when I say them. She says I'm crazy for pronouncing the way I do. Might be a regional thing because of where our parents are from.

So here they are, tell me how you pronounce them...

Full - I pronounce this exactly like I would say "fool". She says the U should sound like the U in Ugly.

Pull - Same thing. I pronounce this exactly like I would say "pool".

Appreciate - I pronounce this like the "e" is a short "i". She pronounces it like the "e" is a long "e". Maybe I'm a little weird on that one.

Thoughts?

Why the hell does it matter? Typical woman overreacting over the smallest things. You better call her on her bday or she'll be pissed off. She sounds like one of those types.

i'm trying to sound these words out the way you claim to say them... there's no way you go through life talking like this without someone punching you in the mouth and telling you to say it right. give your gf tons of apprEciation for tolerating the way you talk for this long.

I don't know. My parents used to have me saying Washington like it was pronounced Warshington. After I went to school for a while it really grated on me to hear them telling me to hang up my "warsh cloth". *shrug*

I'm from Canton, Ohio originally...live in Oakland, CA now. My parents are from Latrobe, PA originally. I think any weird pronunciations are because of Latrobe.

Do Dull and Full rhyme?

For me, hull and dull rhyme. Bull, full and pull rhyme. Like eits, I have a very hard time pronouncing the words as you claim.

I have a very hard time pronouncing "full" with a U like in "ugly". To pronounce like I claim all you have to do is say "bool, fool, and pool".

OP reminds me of Geoffrey Boycott, an English cricketer and color commentator. Probably best known for his trademark 'absolutely roobish!" Damn that Yorkshireman was annoying.

I see what you did there...

Good call.

Normally, who cares how you pronounce your words. However, in this instance you are mispronouncing 1 word so that it sounds identical to a different word. That is obviously problematic and you should be trying to fix and improve your pronunciation in life. There are areas of contention in the English language, this is not one of them, pull should not sound like pool.

I add one caveat to my previous statements. If, in saying pull as pool, you sound like you have a badass british accent, you are allowed to continue bastardizing the language as you see fit, even if no one has a fucking idea what you are saying.

She is right, you are wrong. And in this case not just because she's the woman. But get used to it. L2talk.

Full and pull rhyme with bull, not pool.

Ah, you are missing the umlaut...

Über Püll: I über pülled my groin müscle.

Über Füll: I ate at Bürger King and now I am über füll, soon my toilet will be über füll.

I pronounce them just as they are indicated to be pronounced here.

I wouldn't argue about it though. For some real fun, take her somewhere in the south and ask the local populace how they pronounce; hog, dog or any other word for that matter. Be sure to tell her to count the syllables used too!
