GIF is an acronym for Graphics Interchange Format hence why its gif(t) to me

Well, obviously the creators of GIF pronounced it "Girafficks"

jif annoys me. It's not peanut butter. I don't care how its creator pronounces it, he's an idiot.

A-TOT

That sounds so dumb. A-T-O-T

I'll take my 2-syllable nickname over your 4-syllable acronym any day.

Or why don't we start calling Hot Deals A-T-H-D, or Politics & News A-T-P&N. No, that's silly, it should be said A-TOT because that would the shorthand way of pronouncing AnandTech Off Topic, A-T-O-T is just spelling out it's acronym, much like calling Hot Deals A-T-H-D.

Let go of your prejudices brother! Become an A-TOTer!

Nothing wrong with ATHD or ATP&N. TOT doesn't work because you're combining the middle of one word and another whole word in a syllable. Illogical way to break things up....plus A-TOT sounds ghey. Sounds like you're arguing over tater tots at lunch or something.

Ok sure, but if you simply take the letters A-T-O-T and sound them out as a word it's still said "A-TOT". You may think it sounds ghey or whatever that's your opinion, there is a pretty even keel on this issue so for every one of you who thinks it's stupid/ghey, there's one thinking how you say it is convoluted/wrong. Besides, a lot of cool things have stupid names, and it's not like we have a choice of what something sounds like when we put the letters together. And I don't know about you.. but I don't talk about ATOT outside of ATOT. And if I did, it would come out as "I read this thing on AnandTech..." no one outside of this place would know A-TOT anyway, let alone A-T-O-T lol.

That's ok though, you can have your A, your T, your O, and another T and be happy. I'll be "ghey" and say A-TOT. :D

haha

A-TOT is moronic

The first version of SQL was initially called SEQUEL. Thus, it's perfectly ok to called it "sequel".

I had a teacher once that called in linUCKS hard pronunciation on the UX. I have a coworker that calles it Line-ux.

Otherwise:

Gif as in GIFt
J + Peg
L - O - L Spelled out
Fack
Roffle
Debeean
Linix I kinda give the u an i feel
Oooboontoo

As for others...

I had a coworker call an O.S. an Ose one time which subsequently I heard again while flipping past the G4 channel one day.

Why do so many posters in this thread say "linn-ix"? Do you not see the u? Listen to what Linus Torvalds says

I will accept that that I never even considered how to pronounce it until the thread 6 or 12 months ago that started the debate. Never really said it out loud to anyone before. But the fact is, A-T-O-T is the right way. :)
