*woosh*

No freakin' duh. I have no problem with people saying Say-Tuh or Sat-Uh. I'm saying that to not even consider that people might say each letter means you must not have been around then or you were trying to pronounce something that should not have been pronounced all along. Either way: The question makes ignorant assumptions.

The only "woosh" in here is someone who thinks that a thread on WHAT PRONUNCIATION DO YOU USE needs an option that ISN'T A PRONUNCIATION.

Hint: No one gives a damn if you insist on spelling it out.

How is PRONOUNCING each letter not "a pronunciation?" :colbert:

Just stop trying to save yourself. You're making it worse.

Since when does pronouncing each letter of a word count as pronouncing the actual word?

Frankly, the reason why I responded to you in the first place is this quote...

I hope to God you Sat-Uh/Say-Tuh people didn't try to pronounce IDE/UDMA/UATA before it.
If there's one thing that I hate about the Internet, it's when someone comes in on their goddamn high horse attempting to demean other people for the stupidest reason possible. I mean... why would you even suggest that someone that pronounces an acronym be the type that tries to pronounce an initialism? The distinction between the two is that you can pronounce an acronym... or at least that's what Penn and Teller told me. :p

This stuff.

Um, no military people here? ETA, AOE...there are plenty of common terms that are usually spelled out. And there are plenty of others that are pronounced as words.

The difference: some are structured like words and are recognizable when pronounced. E.g. SATA, PATA. Stuff that would get lost in a sentence if pronounced as a word: IDE, ATA.

Go freakin' figure.

Ugh... don't get me started on that topic. I swear that there must be a government rule for the minimum number of acronyms per sentence! Also, you get bonus points for creating an acronym that contains an acronym! :p

One amusing little anecdote... I was in a meeting once, and I was a bit new to some of the terminology. I wanted to ask about this one thing, but I had no idea what the abbreviation "Btry" was for. ...so I actually said "b try" outloud. Yeah, I found out later that it's short for battery.

"SAY-tuh" or "SAT-uh"?

i guess its kind of like 'data'. i say "dat-uh", therefor I say "SAT-uh"
Interchangeable for me.

I used to say "serial ATA" exclusively and laugh at people who tried to pronounce "SATA." Now, most people who know what "SATA" is would be confused if I said "serial ATA."

Joke's on me.

I have never seen "Btry" before, but "battery" is the first thing that came to mind :D

in the danish army we had acronyms like KANÆVEJFOSKI and FALKUSE, we would pronounce them as a word. usually we came up with dirty words to help us remember them, except for KANÆVEJFOSKI, we never did come up with a word for that one.

most of the letters in KANÆVEJFOSKI are acronyms (of sorts, they stand for a sentence), how many bonus points is that worth?

SATA = Say-tuh

Data = Day-tuh (Confirmed on Star Trek:TNG ;))

NASA = The official pronunciation, næ-sə, (which may override the "correct" pronunciation. If you can find anyone calling is nay-saw, please post it here).

Say-tuh

Oh, and I pronounce McAfee as Mac-Ah-Fee, not Ma-Caf-Ee in case you were wondering about that also.

SAY-tuh

but I also say DAY-tuh so at least we're consistent

This.

Also, there is a bright star called Vega. I say "VAY-gah," but it's supposed to be pronounced "VEE-gah." I keep trying to make myself say it that way but I can't, it's too unnatural.

Sort of like GIF. I use a hard G. The creators of the format claim it's supposed to be pronounced "JIF" like the peanut butter. I say F that, if they wanted it to be pronounced JIF they should have named it that.

Should have made a poll. I go with Say-Tuh myself.

A THREE OPTION poll. ;)

I have never seen "Btry" before, but "battery" is the first thing that came to mind :D

Why not a more commonly understood abbreviation like "BAT?" I see that often enough.

It's NOT an "actual word," genius. I guess I need to say this again:
Just stop trying to save yourself. You're making it worse.

It's clear now that *woosh* was the most appropriate thing I could say. Once again, I'm saying that people who think that we might only say Say-Tuh or Sat-Uh must be ignorant of ATA, UATA, etc before it. It's an observation of how silly it is to assume that we must pronounce it and not saying that people who pronounce it are wrong to do so. I'm talking about EXPANDING the OP's understanding, who previously thought that it must be one of only two ways while ignoring a third, more obvious, way. The "high horse" attitude is the one expressed by you and the IT guy who didn't think my brother knew how to spell "Scuzzy" while reveling in just how limited your understanding/interpretation is.

FWIW, I interchangeably use Say-Tuh and S-A-T-A but prefer S-A-T-A. I also prefer IDE instead of the BACKronym "PATA."

say-tuh. any other pronunciation is bad and you should feel bad if you say it any other way.

I use the American pronunciation (Say-tah and Day-ta.)

I only use the UK pronunciation for Aluminium.
