the main question of this thread is whether the OP and his question's target are Viet or non Viet. knowing of the answer for that question, there should be an appropriate answer for the OP's question.

There was a Big10 football player a few years ago, Dat Nguyen. Always heard his name pronounced as "Dat Win". Hopefully the announcers had it right.

ok, i give up.i cant find any word in english that has the equivalent sound of NG. NG is pretty much like G in "Angle", but lasts longer and heavier.

Not an easy name to pronounce, nor spell correctly :). About 60% to 70% of Vietnamese have either Tran or Nguyen as their last name, perhaps even more :).

i have a friend whose last name is nguyen and is an attorney. he was talking to a client on the phone for the first time and when the client asked my friend to repeat his name, my friend said nguyen (pronounced it win).....the client then answered, "with a name like win, how can i lose?" :D

win is the easy way to pronounce it, a slightly closer approximation would be new-win.

edit: slightly ot, but my gf's old co-worker is dat nguyen's sister in law...he's a big viet guy.

Try this InfoPlease link about Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-HI), which has a pronunciation guide (and be sure to laugh at the name of the pronunciation guide page ;)).
