How do you pronounce "Huang"?

Who-ang but still one syllable, if you get my drift, so you start with who then continue with ang.

Is your friend Cantonese descent? They don't use Mandarin for their names.

They all use the same character in chinese, the same way Zhou, Chow, and Chou are the same.

It's not as clear cut as that. Issue is unified translation did not come into play until I would say latter part of 20th century.

Huang is "Yellow", Wong could be "Yellow" or "King" depending on who did the translation and Wang is "King". Really messed up since the HK people use Cantonese translation.

The example you gave is a bit less muddled. But it is still a Mandarin PY, Cantonese and Mandarin CY issue.

and pronouncing it properly in english depends on which chinese dialect you are speaking.

Yup. Exact same reason why my family arrived here with different spellings of our last names...
