ghee - (from the back of your throat) - ro

you have to know how to "roll" your r's to say it correctly...
Exactly on both counts. The "ghee" comes further towards the back of your tongue than the English "G", and you roll the tongue on the "ro". It actually sounds a little Arabic to me whenever I hear or say it.

It's almost like "hero.' Where do you think the name of a hero sandwich came from? A subtle mispronunciation of Gyro!
Let me put it this way.
The Greek dude that runs the trailer near Drexel U (All you from Drexel and UPenn know the dude, I'm sure..."SALTPEPPAKETCHUP?") got so pissed off at people calling them JAI-ROH that he actually change the menu to say "Yeeros"

always prounced it Ji Ro, now that i have seen this thread i now know that is prounced ye ro.

Makes me want one. There was a place in Westwood that had decent ones with fries for 5 bucks. The meat was tasty, so was the sauce. Gotta find a place around here that sell them.
