People living in a defined area, speaking generally the same language, ruled by one government.

from google (searched for 'define:nation'): "A people who share common customs, origins, history, and frequently language; a nationality," and yes, that is how I personally define it. :)

For example, the United States is a multi-nation state because we have different 'nations' within one state.

Korea would be a multi-state nation because they have one 'nation' within two states (North & South).

It's quite possible to be a nation without being ruled by your government.;)

People who share a the same language, belief system, and are enclosed in a border.

A borderless nation is not a nation. Our country is quickly becoming a borderless nation and I think the end result will be a collapse.

A legal Entity that includes the Land inside its clearly defined borders, and all of the poeple who live there or claim to belong to said entity, by virtue of their legal status as a citizen or a legal resident. This entity has ownership of the land in its borders, and has the right to establish laws for the protection of its citizens and its land and to make treaties or agreements with other entities.

A nation is a group of people who occupy land; borders are imaginary lines from the past.

I don't think that you need to speak the same language in order to be the same country. If that were the case, then many nations would not be defined as a nation. Several countries have many different languages. Some may be able to understand some or all the languages, but obviously not all people within the country. Many European (Belgium, Switzerland, etc.), African (DR Congo, etc.), and Asian (India, etc.) countries would fall within that category.

State /= nation.

there are already relatively distinct "nations" within the united states. There is not such thing as an american "nation"

The Nation of Islam, as an example, is not a place. A lot of Indian tribes (Native Americans) also refer to themselves as a Nation.

I personally define a Nation by it's land and borders.
