EXACTLY!!!! here:

Say you have 100 miles to cover on the highway. The lefthand column is average speed, the right hand is the time it would take to get there. There's barely a half hour for going 30 mph over hte limit, and when you consider the risks to safety and as far as getting pulled over go, it's CLEARLY not worth it.

60 1 hour 36
70 1 hour 24
80 1 hour 15
90 1 hour 6
100 1 hour

and this is for 100 miles, how many of you commute 100 miles each way to work?

I'm capable of doing the math. I'll continue to do 90-100 to save that time.

a lot of speeding in my opinion is caused by the feeling of going slow when your around cars going the same speed. Hence your relative speed to them being like +/- 5mph.

I usually stay under 20mph over the speed limit.

even though eventually you're going to be arrested, have your car seized, and lose everything you value?

bwahahahahhahhahahahahhaha.

you're kidding right? 'round here 25 over is a slap and some points. 120 is normally reduced to 25 over, pay to court costs and be done with it. I lose nothing by getting a speeding ticket.

do the math man. 200 buck ticket vs an hour a day in time. time is money. repeat - time is money.

-edit-
not only that, but there are these things called radar detectors.

here's the math...shaving an hour per day at 200 an hour = 200 bucks per day
5 days a week = 1000 bucks per week
on the off chance that you get a ticket, maybe once per year = 200-300 in court costs/fees
52 grand a year vs. 200-300 bucks for speeding? do tha math man.

Depends where you live I guess. I remember the flow of traffic on the I-5 just north of L.A. frequently being 90 mph, even going into rush hour. Hell even the rigs were doing 80 it seemed. I think it you got dinged for 100 when the flow of traffic was 90, the judge would hardly find it an arrestable offense? Then again, I never got ticketed for more than 93 so I can't comment on that.

I was just on that freeway and i was going 90 but everyone else was still passing me

I went up on I-5 and got pulled over at 93.. and cars were passing me.

Second 90+ ticket in 4 years, no hit my insurance cause of traffic school for both tickets. It's amazing to hear in other states you can get thrown in jail for going that speed. My commute to work, I just go with the flow of traffic.. which is anywhere from 75-90.

I think you forgot to add in the additional cost for car insurance...

Regardless, I'm quite amused by this thread. Most of you are exaggerating by at least 10%. About a week ago, I drove half way across the country. I always had my cruise control set at 7-9mph over the speed limit. Rarely was I passed. Twice though, cars that had passed me were pulled over by police far ahead of me (and I got to chuckle as I drove past them.) IIRC, only 3 cars passed me in all of Illinois. Only a handful in Indiana, and I was thought for sure that they must enforce the exact speed limit in Missouri and Oklahoma, as except for the city of Tulsa, I was only passed once. Perhaps all the ATOT members stayed off the road for a couple of days.

Yesterday there was a dead deer sitting right in the middle of the highway. If you were not paying close attention and going 80+ MPH, you would have been dead. THAT is one reason why speed limits exist. It can take into account possible dangers that you are too stupid to recognize. Granted, I go a bit over sometimes, but I don't regularly go over 80MPH. In fact, I rarely hit 80 because you never know what dangers may lay ahead.

Another time, there was a huge log in the middle of the road that must have fallen off of a logging truck. Again, if I had been going 80 or 90 (despite that there was hardly any traffic), I would have hit that and have died.

So that is why you could go less that 80 when there is no traffic.

Alot of it also depend on what kind of car you drive. If you drive a Bimmer, you are more likely to get nail than let sayy a Camry.

And thats the reason why you have to pay 100% attention to whats going on infront of you when you are going fast. I NEVER speed without being totally "zoned in" to what I'm doing.
Both hands firmly on the wheel, head straight don't look in the mirrors just at whats in front of you.

I only open it up in areas that I know there is nowhere for a cop to camp out, and have a valentine 1 to assist me in assuring that.

I did drive by a cop going 150 once, nobody on the road, didn't see him, he had laser so I didn't notice till the last second, as soon as the radar detector flashed i floored it and he didn't even bother.

I always see it the other way around.

If you're diving a luxury or sports car they are designed with those speeds in mind. If you're driving a econobox they aren't meant to do that. I never see bmws or anything pulled over. Mostly SUVs and econoboxes.

It depends on where you are. I don't believe a red bimmer doing 7-9 over limit wouldn't catch more attention than a Toyota Highlander or something.

You are probably scared doing other things too that may have consequences.

You just have to live the way you feel comfortable with, and not what other's are doing.

You speed enough you do get caught here and there....sometimes it could be big trouble (don't get nailed doing 127mph from a bear in the air in a 55 zone ;) ).

I still speed usually about 10mph over, sometimes 15-20mph. In zones marked 25-35mph I usually stick with the limits as there is a big reason for it. However, my 4 lane communte to work each day is 35mph. It's ridiculous and the pedaling pigs are always up and down it about 5 miles apart. I know where they wait now, but a dozen or so times I have blown by forgetting. I have gotten a ticket here once (41 in a 35, they can't write tickets 5mph or below that give you fines/penaltys).

The police and I have a long history of a love-hate relationship.

I tend to be the fastest driver on the road - on my last road trip to Montreal, I varied between 130 km/h and 150 km/h. When conditions allow, why not? It's not any less safe if it's a straight shot and you're not slaloming between lanes like an idiot. When I come up behind people in the leftmost lane who are moving slower than me, I slow down and creep up to just within that zone of discomfort that has them signal and move over for me. Then I build back up to speed and continue on my way.

Don't know about down there in the States, but up here, roads are definitely meant to traveled upon faster than the posted speed limits. I was in a Hyundai Accent of all things and felt completely safe doing the speeds I mentioned.

Only time I've ever driven over 100 was on a highway through a lightly populated area late at night, and I was 17 and stupid at the time.

I did get pulled over once for doing 90 in the rain, not using my turn signal to change lanes, and following too closely (honestly pretty much anything is following too closely at 90 in the rain). Got a ticket for careless driving (NOT reckless driving), which was fewer points and a smaller fine than if he gave me a ticket for just the speeding. He all but told me that all I had to do to get it dismissed is show up for court, but I didn't bother since my insurance company doesn't raise your rates for getting a ticket.

usually if all/most of the other cars are driving higher than the speed limit, i will go about as faster or a bit less fast as them.

I used to go 85 on the freeways but I don't any more because I hear is is quite fuel inefficient.

Depends on the traffic conditions. On my way home from a party last night, the roads were empty, I was doing 85 in a 55 all the way home.

Why do I speed? It's fun to blast past other cars on the open road.

You hear it is, or did you test it out in your own vehicle?

I get 36 MPG doing 80 on the freeway. I will continue to do so.

Maybe it's just harder in Massachusetts....I've never been in a group doing more than 75 together. EVER. and EVERYONE I know who's been pulled over doing above 85 has gotten arrested and towed.

I live near the 3/495 interchange in MA, so it's pretty common to see 80+ what with the widening of 3 and repaving of 495. I find that if you stick to the center lane, pass only when needed, and don't weave around the traffic, cops will basically ignore you. Although, you're lucky to be doing 30 on the highway during morning and evening commutes (I sooo do not miss working in Waltham).

EDIT: I will admit Western MA is near impossible to speed because the cops have nothing else to do but traffic stops. My Dad once got pulled over on the Pike for going 69 in a 65. In a Buick LeSabre. Yeah, I'm sure he was a real threat to traffic safety.
