I have a few different genre folders (house, lounge-downtempo-acid jazz, pop-rock, etc.) and then artist folders containing album folders.

i.e.,

my music/genre/artist/album

ALSO: what do you do with various artists albums, like dj mix cds

For a less fancy way, pipe a dir to a txt file..

dir /b > mp3.txt

Play wiht the switches to get the effect your looking for.. it can list more then just dir/files in the current directory.

Flac folder #/Artist - year - album title/Artist - Album title - track # - Track title

Have over 1000 discs cataloged this way. Previously I had my CD collection as alpha by artist and chronological by original release date within artist, so this winds up being nearly identical

the .oggs for my karma have the same structure, except they all fit on a single HD.

Edit: don't have many VA discs, but for the few I do, I've put "soundtrack - movie name" or "various artists" for the artist title, and "artist - track title" as the track title

i don't, i just tag more or less correctly. itunes has genre/year or whatever way u want to organize or bring up search lists,..doesn't matter where the file resides. same with copernic desktop search if i just want to find the file. both are more or less instant searches, unlike that pos slow ass search that comes with windows. slowly picking through file system is so obsolete.

By album on my hard drive; ie. ../mp3/Artist - year - album (eg. Metallica - 1986 - Master of Puppets). By artist in foobar, see pic in sig. I also have a directory for singles.

how many artists would be too many, for that system to get unworkable?

I suppose it'd get pretty ridiculous sorting through thousands of artist directories, but I only have a hundred or so.

why html? search features are more powerful..with so many more catagories and such to narrow searches or make lists.

by series or album. a lot of times there are OP and ED singles sang by different singers and it simply makes more sense to clump them up by series.
