How do you name your computers?

I usually refer to it by the CPU. (ie. Athlon 800, etc.)

Unless its really old (486 - [early]586 era). Then I'll usually call it something along the lines of "Ghetto Box" or "Welfare Rig"

If its older yet (286 or so) I'll usually call it POS. 🙂

I name mine by whatever comes to mind at the time.

My Computer is currently: The Black Beast, but that could change at any time.

My HDs are: Oblivion, Big Jed, and Mammoth (80GB).

Retired HD Name (deleted partition on Oblivion): Lawrence

My personal naming scheme is convoluted. However when setting up my brother's network I chose greek letters

Omega
Alpha
Theta
Delta
and I forget what the last one was..........
😱

Mine, as well as my nick, is named after my old death metal band from college. My wife's, Xena, is named after, well, Xena. My game server, Grendel is named after the creature, Grendel, from Beowulf. When I finished the case mod, I thought it looked like a beast with all those spikes, so I named it after a creature.

Cool thread.
My machines have typically had generic names like "computer", or "mybox" heheh.

This tends to lead to confusion at lans though... so now inspired by this thread I'll have to think of something creative. 😉

Quacky, daffy, and sleepy so far. Also have used Matrix characters, months, countries, colors, flavors of ice cream, foods, etc. 🙂

My naming scheme is based on the regions of Super Metriod.

Main rig: Imperical (the only exception, it's after my AIM nick)

File Server: Madridia (largest zone in Super Metriod, akin to the most storage space 😉)

Family Computer: Norfair (originally was overclocked, so I named it after the hot zone)

Entertainment Rig: Tourian (mATX, zone is the smallest region)

Laptop: Brinstar (no real reason, brinstar is my favorite area... but the laptop isn't my favorite computer... it's something that I'm just too used to or else I'd change the name)

I shouldn't build any more computers since I'm running out of super metriod zones to name them after 😉

Crateria and Ghost Ship are all that's left... and they don't sound as cool 🙂

main box: ctho9305
2nd box: c2h5oh
3rd box: dualppro
4th box: dualppro

(3rd and 4th are just things i'm playing with, they share a hard drive and hence a name. but that 4th box will probably be called jesus or something cause it was free with a dead mobo that I fixed with a soldering iron and a bunch of parts (no, i'm not kidding))

I used to use names of mythical creatures, but I forgot all the myths while I was at Uni, so since then, I name them after black things. In recent memory I've had box, magic, art, mail, out, guard, ball and most recently death. The previous firm I worked for used names of Scotch whiskies, but they complained when I called a machine bunnahabhain (I wonder why?). The one before that used the names of rivers or streams in the local area, alphabetically (annan, bladnoch, closs, and so on). Another used names of hills. Uni used names of villages.

Mine spent SO much time in Memphis in transit here that a friend suggested that it was visiting Graceland. When it FINALLY started heading this way, I left a note to a friend:

Elvis has left the building...

Little did I suspect that it would become my computer's name.

I just name mine according to whatever comes to mind when I first built it.

Main rig = acorn
Second rig = buckshot
Laptop = judicator

🙂atwl

I started naming my machines from x-files characters. but when I recently rebuilt my workstation I named it Kenny(south park)... surpsingly it hasn't died since I rebuilt it...

My main system is called 'jrw' my username/email from my university. It came about from my dorm days when we had a network on the floor even before the campus installed twisted pair. We had it running above in the tiles. It was much nicer when they installed it permanently. Made our jobs easier. Using our username made it much easier to know who computer we were browsing on.

I'm an avid Star Trek fan, so as soon as I leave grad school (in a couple of months) I'll probably start naming them off of ship or ship-class names.

Vader - XP1800, all black system
Skywalker - Old P2-400 my 3 yr old son uses (also used as 2nd lan gaming rig).

i name mine in relation to the power of the system..

the fastest one is Powertower and the slowest is Slowpo.... you get the idea

I have a shifting name system. The best system is always named "adept", the next system (usually my fileserver) is named "jeeves", if I have a third system (not currently), it's "junior", and our two laptops are called "intrepid" and "reluctant" after the fact that I like to travel ("intrepid") and my wife hates to travel ("reluctant").

"jeeves" is usually an "adept" hand-me-down, and "junior" is a leftover "jeeves", so it's a sliding naming system. 🙂

My computer has always been named "adept" ever since I first plugged my computer into a DNS network back in 1990 or so.

I name mine after names that in my opinion just sound cool, i.e;

Keon, Kerberos, Cerebrate, Cerberus and so on..

(Although I think I had a theme from the beginning, it's all lost now)
