I looked at a lot of different names and thought about what his nicknames would be, also considered what the initials would spell.

I chose "Matthew" because it means "Gift from God"

15 yrs later I have to say that I chose well, Matt is indeed a gift :)

I named my boy Daniel after one of my best friends.

For me the simplest thing was crossing off names of people you don't like. Then filtering through what is left. Dunno if that helps.

It is tradition in my family to choose one part of the name (whether it be first or middle) from another member (distant or otherwise) of the family. So myself and my two brothers each have a name from another family member. For example, one brother's middle name was taken from my uncle Duncan.

My wife wanted to name our kid Kyle at first but Kyle pronounced in Japanese is Kaeru which means frog. So we nixed that.

BTW: Uma as in Uma Thurman in Japanese is horse.

I wanted to go with Stanaslaus or Lenthorp, be we finally decided on Alouishus. We didn't want to use any strange names like Fred or Larry (don't want kids making fun of him and all that :D)

Easy....the first born son of the first born son always has the same name in my family. Been that way since the beginning of time as far as I can tell...

Serious answer: Ive thought about it and I would like to name my sons after the five pandav brothers which are characters in the Bhagavd Gita and old Indian story.

Maybe Arjun or Bheem

they will have indian names for sure.

My wife and I just liked the name Alex... so that was his first name. She liked my middle name (Cade) so she threw that in as his middle name. In the end we had Alexander Cade. Easy enough.

Please, whatever you do, avoid names that are confusing/impossible to spell/or sound childish.

Avoid names like these: Kim, Gene, Pat, Aaron, Jamie, or anything else that is difficult to know by the sound if it is male or female.

Avoid names like these: Alouishus or Shiovahn since your child will spend hours each day trying to tell people how to spell/pronounce his name.

Avoid names like these: Buba, Little Bo, or anything else that will make your son sound stupid or childish when he grows up.

Bascially put yourself in his shoes (would you want to deal with the problems of that name?) By the way, I only used names of guys I know that have names I hate.

Then there was that poor kid who was named "Dong Xuong Ouwahwahwahwah" after his parents accidentally got the Wok mixed in with the rest of the pots and pans.

har har har.

OK, some simple rules.

1. keep it short i.e 3 syllables or less OR a long name with a suitable short nickname
2. keep it easy to pronounce, nothing worse then correcting people with your name, trust me on this one.
3. Make absolutely sure they won't get crap in school i.e(1) try to avoid having the same first and last name as a famous person, you may like them but your kid may not, plus its nice to build your own identity. Make sure it doesn't resemble inanimate objects in aleast the two most common languages they will come accross (trust me on this one too). Avoid names that define character e.g tiny, goliath or some crap like that.
4. it helps when the name has some kind of personal meaning, i.e named after someone clos eto you

hope this helps
