How do you mount an SSD into a desktop?

Hey guys, how do you guys mount an SSD into a desktop system? I've been thinking about getting one for a system drive but I don't know how I'd get the 2.5" drive in there (why can't they make 3.5" SSDs or 2.5" bays for newer cases?)

There are adapters somewhere (IE the drive fits into the adapter and the adapter fits into the case.) I forget where to find them.

I've heard people describe using zip ties to suspend them inside the standard drive case. I suppose you could also use string for this purpose.

n7's idea would work also, remember these drives (unlike their mechanical cousins) are highly resistant to impacts.

Here's how mine is mounted.

No moving parts, so orientation and mounting shouldn't really matter. Just stick it wherever you have room. If you move your case around a lot, use double-sided tape or something to secure it.

It doesnt vibrate/move, it doesnt create much heat (i.e no cooling required) nor does it make a noise. I dont think it matters where you locate the SSD tbh.

edit - some even have it duct taped on the side panel!

Make sure you research it properly. the velociraptor is much faster and better than almost all SSDs, the only exception is the intel X25-M, the intel X25-E, and maybe one or two SSDs that JUST came out now in 2009... (as in, this week) and still need some more in depth testing to verify they are actually better.

Four of 'em in a single 5.25" bay!

These work great for Savio's (15K SAS) and Velociraptors too. If you have more than four drives I'd suggest an 8x1 vertical 2.5" bay particularly for SAS. Remember a SAS host/backplane is compatible with SATA too. (Just cannot run SAS and SATA drives on the same *backplane* but you can on the same controller. (with performance restrictions though)

taltamir: I currently have a 300 gb velo and a dying 250 gig WDC. Was thinking I could either get a 640 Black as a storage or spend a bit more for an SSD. Going with an SSD, I'd use that as the system drive and my velo as storage (which seems like a waste). I still haven't decided which route is better but the G.Skill Titan 128gb looks real good at ~$300.

Just my two cents......I had and have been using raptors since they came out.I had a 300 gb velociraptor and tried the 32gb patriot warp v2 ssd.It was so good I went out and bought another.In my experience there is NO contest that the ssd's are way better.No access time,boot time cut in half,loading games really a difference.

If you do get the titan for a system drive, sell the velociraptor on ebay, buy a 1TB drive as storage, and keep the rest of the money. Heck I think you could buy 2x1TB drives and STILL have some money left over for the cost of one velociraptor 300GB.

The Titan is a dual Jmicron controller-based SSD, it still will have the stuttering issues (though possibly less than a single-controller design). It's basically the same drive as the OCZ Apex series.

I would wait for something like the OCZ vertex or the new Samsung MLC models that use a new controller.

someone wrote a review saying it doesn't have the sutttering anymore and that it outperforms the intel in every way. Which seems very odd considering what the anadtech analysis wrote. I want more reviews on the titan before I make up my mind. One reviewer saying its good is not enough to trust 300$ to.

Hmm... I've been considering just getting another 300 gb velo instead of an SSD and just doing Raid 0 since I already have one. Those of you who actually have had both (velo and good SSD), does the SSD feel that much faster?

Also, is Raid 0 hard to set up or anything? Can I partition it back into multiple drives or would that defeat the purpose? I've got a Gigabyte DS3L and am using Vista 64. I've built machines for a while but just never messed with Raid in the past.

Like I stated earlier,there is way better performance with the patriot ssd drives I have.I have messed with raptors,velociraptors with raid,etc,etc,etc.I will never go back to regular hd's.The no access time to me is enough,everything feels so much snappier,load times are way faster and boot time is crazy fast.I know its tempting to raid and stick with a raptor because of the price\storage ratio but if you are into performance first you cant beat ssd's.Plus you can always raid the ssd's and then the performance is out of this world which I am running now.

I zip-tied mine in. It looks ok - you can't really see the zip ties - and it's not going anywhere.
