That's not what you said before
Um, yes, that's exactly what I said. What part of, "Give me a CD with an OS on it that is as simple to install as MS, has as many easy user configurable options, and has as much third party software compatibility as MS, and I'll use it.", did you not understand?

I want something as simple and compatible as Windows XP. If you can point me to a version of Linux that does that, I'll check it out. But I've seen too many software programs that say, "Minimum Requirements - Windows XP", and don't say, "Minimum Requirements - Windows XP or Linux". I've heard about too many hardware issues with Linux and having to fuddle around with fixes and work-arounds to get things to work.

I'm not saying Linux is bad, it just doesn't offer the user as much general easy compatibility as Windows does at the moment. When it does, if it ever does, I'll most likely give it a look.

Most of the stuff that you can install for Linux is available on the Internet.

And 99 percent of it is free.

And when I read your question, I was able to answer yes to every single one with Mandrake Linux.

As for your last line, please be more specific.

Before bashing an OS which you do not understand, give me specific examples or else you will look like an ignorant user.

Edit: Linux is actually easier to install then Windows XP, and you can customize it to your liking a LOT more then Windows. No competition.

And I have yet to see a windows based machine which has a higher uptime then Linux or bsd

Wrong. Give the average joe a copy of Windows XP and Mandrake Linux (or any flavor) and see which one seems harder for them to install. I prefer linux myself but I'm also an above average "geek" 😀 Anyone who actually believes it's easier to use/install than windows is just fooling themselves.

LOL, there have actually been tests done in that regard. Read it on www.linuxtoday.com.

Linux actually won the test.

For the average joe, you would be suprised how hard it is for them to install windows xp.

LOL at that stupid bolded comment. thats like saying go to www.microsoft.com and see how many people think that windows is better than linux ...

First off, I'm not bashing Linux. Not at all. It's a great OS for those that want to use it. But I'm talking about commercially available software - commercial programs and games - that are all generally compatible with Windows. This is what I use and I don't feel like changing that to accommodate another OS.

I do dislike people who think that all Windows users are idiots in their choice of OS, as intimated by the OP. I use Windows for a specific reason, and that reason is ease of use and general compatibility. Linux may have ease of use comparable to Windows now, I don't know, but until Linux offers the same general hardware and software compatibility that Windows does, I'm just not interested.

Like I said, I'm not bashing the OS; it's great for those of you that want to use it and find that it suits your needs. Others will bash it, but personally, I just don't care and don't see what all the fuss is between using one OS and another. I do find however, that it is usually the Linux users that start the bashing of someone else's OS.

good point, i too never hear windows people start this whole argument, which in the long run is stupid. i have used both linux and windows as well, and i use windows for your reasons ... everything i want to do is easiest on windows. and i know this from experience, because I have ran both OS before.

Give linux to an AOLer, which is probably like 50% of people who use computers. they would have no clue where to start. windows is just simple, and people like simple. that isn't a no brainer. sure linux might be more secure, and be open source, and have alot of better features, but to the typical computer use, who doesnt even know how to use linux, which I would say is about 50% of computer users out there (again, just a guestimate), windows is ideal for their users, and it is presented in the simplest form.

as far as the security goes, if you wanna take control of my windows box with like 100gb HD on it, go ahead. im sure there are much better targets out there than my lil box sitting at home. i also don't run AV programs either and have never had a virus. i just hooked up a router last night so i have that built in firewall, but before that, i didnt have anything.

You call Windows simple? Dude, if Windows was simple, then a LOT of people would be out of a job.

There would be no more need for tech support now would there be 😛

And Windows is harder to use then you might realize.

Your just used to it. Having been trained on both Linux and Windows, I can guarantee you that Linux is actually easier to use.

What makes you say Linux is just as insecure as windows?
Apparantly you know very little about the topic in which you speak. I'm guessing you installed mandrake for the first time within the past year and think it's gods gift to computing.
To quote ameesh..
the misconception here is you think there aren't the same number of security flaws in linux or *nix that has features activly being added as there are in windows, the truth is all the os's have the same number of security flaws its just the media and the trades dont publish them as much, try signing yourself up for redhat secuirty emails , that list itself will mailbomb you everyday.
I used to get flooded with security updates and warnings on a daily basis for both *nix and windows based OSes in my time as a network admin.

The attempts to compromise unix based operating systems are much lower than windows based. People write thousands of exploits, worms, trojans and programs designed to attack a windows based os.
This will be a generalization but, usually the people who write these programs are hardcore *nix zealots. Why would a fellow "hacker" generate code to exploit a system he and his friends helped develop. It's just not ethical in the subculture.

The huge difference is really the amount of people who get the chance to proof-read the code.

There are maybe 1000-2000 folks who check the code for vulnerabilities for Microsoft Software. Ameesh could probably give a better estimate since he worked there before.

open source software on the other hand, has MILLIONS of people who check the code for vulnerabilities.

That in itself, helps linux be more secure then windows.

Also, the archiecture in Linux was designed for security, then user-friendlyness.

The archiecture in windows was designed for user-friendlyness, then security.
Millions of people allow for millions of more mistakes to be made. These people are also mostly not getting paid and have little stake in the success of the operating system.

You speak as if you know very little about the nix development community...
Your comment about linux being designed to be more secure and windows more user friendly blah blah is a huge load of bs.

Also, what are we comparing here, linux as a whole vs windows as a whole? That argument is moot, there is no point in actaully even presenting that. I don't want to get sucked into this friggin argument again with a bunch of kids who install a flavor of linux for the first time and then go on and on about the merits of the operating system when they havnt even begun to use the os in ways for which is was designed.

It's like saying, "my hummer is better than your ferrari off road. Oh yea, well my ferrari is better than your hummer on the highway".

disclaimer: I use both windows and bsd(not that bs linux crap).

If Linux were used by 90% of the people, it would be the one constantly under attack.

So far I have never had a problem with MS and the updates aren't that much of a problem.

That doesn't explain why the Webservers and MS-SQL servers get hacked when there is a lot less of them than Linux servers running Apache and MySQL.

To be completely honest, it is done because it is a lot easier.

also its all about marketting. windows is on top by far, and that will most likely never change. when is the last time you saw a linux commercial, or a product advertised for a linux OS? probably never. thats just how the world is.

However, I do agree that in the marketing department, Windows wins. This is why it's so popular.
(yes, because of marketing, not because of technical superority).

Linux though is gaining market share strictly due to the technical department. It's quite fun to watch the news.

Is Windows really simpler? I have used windows quite a bit but still don't know how to change file permissions for a specific user in a specific group while making it executable but not writable for others in another group.

Most windows users log in as admin and have access to the entire system, there, problem solved? LOL

Can we bring this debate into a town hall format?

Seriously, Linux vs Windows has been going on for who knows how long. Will probably continue for a long time, too. Is anyone here actually gonna change their mind due to this thread?

lol i love how all the linux guys are saying 'linux is just as easy to install, configure, and use as windows is!' hah that is a buncha BS.

Having been trained on both Linux and Windows, I can guarantee you that Linux is actually easier to use.

windows is alot simpler than linux, and yes i too have used both of them extensively. no matter what OS you use there will be tech support needed. dude, there are people who use windows that don't even know what double clicking does. windows is by FAR the most used OS, therefore new users to computers see windows and run that, therefore having the most NEW TO COMPUTER USERS than any other operating systems. in reality, 99.9% of people, when they FIRST jump on a computer, are going to jump on one that has Windows on it. That or Mac, depending on their field of interest. it is almost guaranteed that linux is not a first-OS type experience for any first time computer user.

also its all about marketting. windows is on top by far, and that will most likely never change. when is the last time you saw a linux commercial, or a product advertised for a linux OS? probably never. thats just how the world is.

Is Windows really simpler? I have used windows quite a bit but still don't know how to change file permissions for a specific user in a specific group while making it executable but not writable for others in another group.

Most windows users log in as admin and have access to the entire system, there, problem solved? LOL

chmod 750 filename?

Again, you're an above average user. An average user would find it easier to right click on a file and click on some check boxes rather than having to open up a terminal, cd to the directory, and then chmod the file. I couldn't even begin to imagine having to walk my dad through a linux install

A new user could use Linux just as easily as Windows.

However, I do agree that in the marketing department, Windows wins. This is why it's so popular.
(yes, because of marketing, not because of technical superority).

Linux though is gaining market share strictly due to the technical department. It's quite fun to watch the news.

Why don't you understand that this statement is just WRONG. A true open source advocate would not be so close minded.

Till you prove me wrong. I never claimed to be a true open source advocate, I'm just going with what I see, what I hear, and what I believe

ps: how the heck does that make me close-minded?

You're obviously not looking very hard.

He is actually right though.

If you're limiting it to desktop OS only, maybe. But then expand it to factor in that your "average Linux user" is a fair bit smarter than the average Best-Buy-Special user and you'll see why. 😛
