How do you make curry from curry powder?

I got a bunch of spices as a present and one of the spices i got was curry powder... it doesn't have any instructions as to how to prepare it. Anyone know how to make curry sauce out of it?

 
A curry sauce can literally be anything you have together... in a pot. Saying "curry sauce" is also almost redundant. What type of curry dish are you looking to make? Googling will give you hundreds of recipes. There isn't a singular notion of what constitutes a curry dish.

I tried google, but it looks like the recipes are making curry from scratch which doesn't apply to me. I just want to make a curry chicken with onion dish that you'd find in most indian/thai restaurants.
 
When I make curry chicken, I just go out and buy the "golden curry" chunk sauce and use that. Mix the chunks w/ water and BAM, instant curry.

Sautee some chicken and vegetables in a pan with s&p, add some currey powder, add some heavy cream, reduce for a couple minutes...voila! Put it on some rice or even pasta and you are good to go.

Well, I make curry based dishes all the time with my Indian buddies, and most of them use a powder as the base and add everything else: cloves, onions, tomato, potato sometimes, coriander, cumin, turmeric, ginger, chilis (they like it HOT), etc.

Googling turned up this recipe. This is pretty close to what I make, but again, there's no single recipe. Put in what you like 🙂 Being an American, my tastes are a little different. I like cinnamon, ginger, clove, coriander seed and cilantro in my curry dishes. Those are the basic ingredients. I also put in yogurt because I like a thicker consistency.

Do you have a Wild Oats, Whole Foods, or Indian store? Patel Brothers is a pretty common Indian store I believe. That's where we'd get most of our ingredients.

Any chinese supermarket or just asian supermarket will sell it.

The box is golden colored and it's called "Golden Mix" or something like that.
 
if you have curry powder, all you need is mix some corn starch with some water, then heat the starch on a low flame, and put curry powder in, add more water as desired.

that one tastes disgusting. i use the "vermont curry" one that i buy at my local korean market.

 
You can do lots of stuff with curry powder.

Cook some white rice, drain it well and set it aside for a few minutes to completely drain. In a skillet, melt a few tablespoons of butter then add a few teaspoons of soy sauce, some curry powder, some chili powder, some ground cumin, some garlic powder and some onion powder (I'm purposely leaving off the amounts...start with about 1/4 tsp each and add more as you like). Then stir in the rice. Fry on medium heat for a few minutes, adding more soy sauce until the rice is a light brown color. Good stuff. If you like, you can stir in frozen peas or diced precooked chicken (do make sure you cook it first).

 

Curry can be use in meat, fish, vegetarian, and fruit dishes. It can be use by itself or with other herbs, and it can be use as is, pre bake, roasted, or pre heat in oil prior to cooking to bring out the spices flavors.

On a side note, my Mom just made some AWESOME CURRY... god damn that was good. Toasted french bread + curry sauce = 😱~~~~~~
