exercise (cardiovascular) for about 6 months. keep track of your heart rate every day. measure right when you get up. you'll see it go down.

great athletes have incredibly low resting heart rates

Western medicene approach: get daily, moderate aerobic exercise and combine that with proper nuitrition.
Eastern medicene approach: meditate.

One works, one doesn't.

btw, if you're not physically fit or overweight, and especially if there's any history of heart disease in your family, go see a doctor.

It's kind of funny because today in stats everyone took their pulse rate, and mine was 88! THat's resting... I'm only 17... not overweight, skinny as hell actually. Is that above average?

A typical marathon runner has a resting heart rate of 30-40bpm. If you want to lower your heart rate you have to exersize and work that heart muscle so it's stronger and has more slow twitch muscle tissue.

Bingo. With a resting heartrate that high at 22 I would seriously talk to a doc before starting a workout program to rule out other causes of it being that high. How is your blood pressure? Drink a lot of coffee/soda? Could be caffeine related as well.

On another side note, lay on the couch for about five minutes and take it while laying there. Then stand up, wait exactly one minute, and take it standing up. If it is much higher while standing you are probably dehydrated.

my father has been jogging for so long that his heart rate will set off the alarms in hospitals.

90? Unless you're on drugs (even caffeine), that's too high. You may have some kind of infection in your body. Go see a doc!

Your resting pulse is very high if it is in fact 90bpm. Try taking it when you first wake up in the morning (still lying in bed) and see what it is.

To answer your question (and have others have pointed out) you have to get in shape to lower your resting pulse. As you get fitter, your heart gets stronger and is capable of moving more blood per beat....hence it beats fewer times per minute. Miguel Indurain (five-time winner of the Tour de France) had a resting pulse rate around 28bpm.

A high resting pulse is not necessarily a bad thing - as long as you have low blood pressure.

Yes - a trained athlete will have a lower resting pulse, but it doesn't mean a high one is bad...

Eating cheesburgers and masturbating once or twice a day just doesn't cut it.

a low-salt, low-cholesterol, low-saturated fat diet + moderate daily exercise = far fewer health problems over the years and no hospital visits. Plus you just plain feel better!
