Hello, e-coli girl here.

Saulbadguy, you're a jerk.:|

Maybe getting e-coli is rare, believe me I know, but when it happens to you then it doesn't feel so rare anymore. Most of my close family members rarely, if ever, eat beef now. They know chances are they won't get sick, but after seeing what happened to me none of us even want beef anymore.

Like NuclearNed said, you can get e-coli from a steak, and yes it's rare. We believe I got it from a hamburger eaten at a fast food place. Don't count on them always following "safe handling" instructions.

We aren't completely paranoid. We still eat out, just not beef. Everyone else enjoy your beef because if I hadn't been sick I'd probably still be eating it.

The key is hamburger meat + fast food chain... which could be a combination of lots of different qualities of ground beef...

steakhouses, on the other hand... usually have handling protocol... i know because i was yelled at for trying to push the seasoning into a steak (for myself)... also burgers at the Outback were ground sirloin... not just regular unk beef...

am sure with every incident that hits home, people become more wary of things that they werent before.. ex: fireworks, Sept 11, car accidents, etc....

It was very unfortunate what happened to u PianoGirl and I would definitely understand the precautions u take now. Being that high risk really sux (lolz i was a nurse before too... but can u believe selling steaks made more money? LPN btw)...

For me...I know the risk of colo-rectal cancer later down the road as a result of eating so much red meat lolz..

A few years ago, my wife got e-coli from beef, suffered incredibly, nearly died, and now I'm extremely paranoid about undercooked cow.

You cannot get E-coli from a medium rare - medium steak. The bacteria cannot penetrate the meat.

Ground beef must be cooked all the way through because every part of it has been exposed all the way through. Steak, on the other hand, has not. Only the surface must reach the ideal temp of 160F (and it does so in seconds on a grill).

You're wasting good meat for nothing.

wow good point... got sources? lolz

Google e-coli and look up food handling/cooking recommendations. The info is all over the web.

I would agree with the prior post on food handling. Someone abused that steak ;)

Med Well... no pink. I only eat stakes at home from our farm. Very few places serve good steaks and even fewer can cook med well correctly (end up tuff). Don't trim the fat as there is where the flavor comes from as well what keeps it moist.

Medium rare, or if it's a nice filet - rare.
No sauce, little seasoning.

I never understood how people can eat it any different.. it tastes so much different (worse). A1 sucks.

That is correct. It was taught in the food handling prep. certification class. Ground beef you do have to worry about e-coli, steak you don't. It's only on the surface.

Medium Rare to Medium, depending on the place. If I can depend on them to cook it right, MR if not M.

People in Northern VA, The Palm, Flemings, and to a lesser extent Outback... Some of the tastier steak places.

Medium Rare for me

I work in a kitchen that at times will cook steaks when they are on our flyer and YES most people will choose medium/medium well

it is quite rare to find people that request rare or medium rare steaks at a restaurant due to the fact that they may not trust the freshness/quality of the meat since they are not handling it for themselves.

Always safe to go medium or higher when you yourself are not cooking the steak (watch out for e.coli!)

Flemings and Outback use the same steaks... (well Flemings uses Outback's prime cut steaks) They both belong to OSSI aka Outback Corporation. The whole point is ur paying about 2-3x more for a better dining experience...
