How do you learn to drive stick if noone you know owns a stick?

Then I guess you'll drive automatic forever.

(find a friend, steal a car or something - just be aware that learning to drive stick on a video game is not in any way representative of actually physically driving a car with manual transmission)

i learned how to drive on a stick, so i can't tell you

nope.. all the car rental places near me (Northern VA) only have automatic

i've seen this $300 rusted accord coupe (probably 5-speed) and im tempted to buy it. however keep in mind that older sticks probably have worn clutches

this guy at my last job bought a new mini cooper S (6 speed) and he never drove stick before. he didn't kill it and learned how to drive a stick.

Try calling some driving schools in the area ...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/metro/driving/virginia-driving-schools.html

They might have behind the wheel courses on learning to drive manual.

Personally, I just bought a second car and learned on it ... If you're careful and take your time, learning stick should not be that detrimental to the car. Just don't start revving the car up and dumping the clutch ... you'd do less damage stalling the car. Took me about an hour of driving in a parking lot for 2 nights to teach myself how to drive stick, with my friend helping me out (just really telling me what I was doing wrong -- too much gas, too little gas, etc).

Where in Northern Virginia do you live? -- I'm in Herndon.

there was this old old old arcade game that had a real clutch, i think you drove a ferrari, it was weird cuz you went upside down in a loop and such, anyone remember this?

=) have someone from school or something park your car on flat land. Once midnight time hits (12am) take the car out and drive it. Bascially @ 12am on a school night your are on the road by yourself.

or.............

take the car to a steep hill and get your self over it =) to make it back home of course.. try it @ night time.

Once you hit traffic you will bascially stall the car out since your worrying about the people around you lol.

Race drivin, or Hard drivin. That was a sweet game, you could stall the car and the force feed back on the steering wheel was the most realistic of any game I have ever played, itfelt like they had a washing machine motor behind it. I stopped going to my county fair when the arcade got rid of that game. It was old at the time so I could sit there and play it for hours on end.

Think about what has to be done and do it and pratice pratice pratice. No one showed me how but I learned on a motorcycle. Guy I got it from gave me a quick run down of the gears and levers and took off. Lots of trial and error. Then when I bought my first stick car (1964 ford econoling van with 3 on the tree) my father said here is the gear patern and left me there.

Just dont be scared and just do it. But run it through your head and in the parking lot before even moving and pratice out the movements. And remeber in a OH SH!T situation to always apply the clutch and the brake pedal at the same time.

Isn't it easier on a motorcycle? Because you can't grind gears or shift from fifth to second?

You're more likely to die on a motorcycle.

My mom bought me my first car and it was a stick shift. She drove manuals when she was younger but refused to teach me. I basically had to learn myself and I stalled out a lot.

Reminds me of those birds who push the chicks out of the nest. The weak ones die.

Driving school through AAA.

Driving stick is extremely easy. I don't understand why people make it out to be a monumental task.
