Hi, I was wondering how on earth can I find out what kind of Amd thunderbird processor I´m buying??? Ayhja or whatever..
I am buying a new pc and was thinking about going with the 1200 tbird and an ASUS A7V133 board. Is this usable in OC conditions, paired with a 350 Watt powersupply that is??
Pls help a newbie in the OC buisness.

You need to go to an online store where you can get the stepping you want. I just (10 mins ago) ordered a 1ghz T-Bird AXIA from OCz for $99. You should give them a look.

Here is a chart of average OCs for the different steppings on the T-Birds.

Well.. if you are talking about identifying the stepping visually then you will have to look at the small little words on the die.. If I remember correctly, the stepping type is written on the third line; AXIA, AYHJA, etc.. The processor speed is written on the line above it.. If possible, try to handpick your processor at the store.. I have heard that chips of a certain setting and stepping (and perhaps even week of production) overclocking better than other chips. One example is the 1.33GHz AYHJA "Y". Most people seem to get getting good oc results with these babies. Oh.. when I said "Y", it means the fourth line on the die starts with the letter "Y".

Hope this helps. :)

ya I agree just go to online store that sell O/C T-bird and the price may be a little bit higher but you will receive higher performance.
u can find it at pricewatch.com

about the code it seems AXIA stepping code very familiar among Overclockers.

Go to pricewatch.com...anyways...say you are looking for a specific chip with a specific stepping, like say for example a 1.33 AYHJA. Then you would type in search 1.33ghz AYHJA...and some listings of retailers should pop up. Retailers that sell "specific" steppings will charge you more...i think you are better off getting your stuff @ newegg.com...pay a lot less and you get good service from a trusted retailer. If you're aiming for a 1.4...then you'll for sure get the AYHJA stepping which is one of the best steppings. The 1.33's newegg has range from the AXIA C, K, and the AYHJA...most ppl i've talked and the chips i bought myself from newegg.com were also AYHJA. Also, if you don't buy from newegg.com...make sure you buy from a place that has a good reseller rating...there are rumors about "marked" chips being sold by these specific stepping sellers.

EDIT: I think you should aim for a 1.33 or 1.4 instead of the 1.2....cuz i don't think you can get an AYHJA stepping with the 1.2. You might get the AXIA Y...the earlier week ones but they are pricey cuz only specific dealers have them and they are kinda hard to find. My AYHJA 1.33 doing 1.6+...but 350...that's gonna be kinda border line...i have a enermax 431.

Is OCz a good company now a day? I am looking to upgrade. Last time I checked, they have very bad service.

Okay, thats good but what in the hell does hsf stand for????
May sound stupid but I have to know.
And shouldn´t I just get me some crucial sdram with it, I can´t use ddr can I??
And this should all work fine with an ata100 Ibm hardrive right?
Sorry if I have gone over the line in the "this is a cpu forum" thingy :)

Your heatsink and fan = HSF. The ASUS A7V133 only takes SDRAM. Just go over to Crucial.com and get a stick of 256MB PC133. I got one a week ago for $53 shipped two day air.

Or go to a computer show. Computer shows are completely useless for anything else, but I recently hand-picked a 1GHz AXIA Y that is running at 1450 at 44 degrees C. No guarantees on overclockability, but you can guarantee that you will get the stepping/codes you want, and thereby increase your odds (if you've done your homework).
