How do you know when you have to tweak your voltage when OCing a CPU?

well, I'll push a cpu as far as I can with a logical maximum voltage(for example, i won't push 1.85 on a Coppermine, and even then its pushing it, and i don't like keeping it there). I find the highest stable speed i can get, then slowly drop the voltage until it does crash. I've ended up getting my 650E cb0 @ 975@ 1.7 volts.
