how do you know if you fry a cpu?

i set FSB to 220 on barton 2500 and now pc wont go to bios, even after clearing cmos...

Is it fried? haha

it's not fried. you will know it's fried when it starts to smoke or there's a huge burn mark on the cpu. try removing the mobo battery and placing it back. when you clear the cmos, it's a good idea to unplug the power cable to the psu.

Check your motherboard!!! Look at the RAM, Processor, caps, etc!!! Do you smell anything burining? Like Mik3y said unplug PSU, take out battery, clear cmos, replace battery, and plug in PSU again. If that doesnt work I dont know man... Good luck!!!

You didn't go to 220 from 166 did you? Anyway, if anything, I'd imagine your RAM would be the most likely culprit. Otherwise, try just letting the ah heck sit after you pull the battery before putting it back in. Worked for me a couple of times.

also try to hold delete or insert on the keyboard before switching off the power in hopes of it to defaulting to "safe" specs.

well, i just stuck a 1ghz tbird in the mobo and set to 100fbs on jumper, and she booted up fine, so the processor is definetly fried if It wont boot when i swap back... mobo and ram are fine!!

Well, I put the 2500 back in the motherboard and hit power and the pc actually turned on like it was supposed to but, very quikly shut itself off... I waited about 10 minutes and tried again, saw the screen start to come alive, then the mobo shut off again.


I got all the way into windows and everything using the tbird in here...

Maybe my thermal paste isnt adequate enough?

update:

I took enitire setup I used to local Pc store to test on ther e"techAId" Pci diagnostic card.

teh cpu I have was placed in another board, pc powered on and booted fine.

then the pci card diagnostics gave some sort of code relating to bios flash, funny because i flashed bios with live update before this error occured.

the psu used was an Antect smartPower 350, came with new Antec case, I'm replacing that with the enermax 431 true i have here now.

Also, the HSF WAS (ouch) seated improperly before Pc store diagnostic.


The techs there suggested that everything may be fine hardware wise, that the bios might need to be restored....

Very strange. you're lucky you didn't crush your processor with the heatsink seated improperly. Get some Artctic Silver 5 on that. It's the best thermal grease around.

I went from Arctic Silver 3 to Arctic Silver 5 on a barton 2500 with stock cooling and my temps dropped about 3C average. Just curious, did you have the multiplier set to 11 or did you increase that as well? Also, what memory speed were you running?
